When the President Talks to God
In honor of Bright Eyes (Connor Oberst) arriving in Missoula today and playing one show at the UM Theatre tonight, I repost these lovely lyrics:

BRIGHT EYES LYRICS

"When The President Talks To God"

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

2. I love that song...
I lobbied for months when I was in college for Conor Oberst to be the act at our spring concert 2 years in a row, ultimately I lost the debate both times and we ended up having some crappy jam band that I never heard of before (Pat McGee) and Rusted Root (who I hate with a passion) instead. They both sucked. :boring:

I got to see Conor the following night though the second year. This was back in the Commander Venus/early Bright Eyes days before Conor became really famous. It was great, It was at the Black Cat (might have been 9:30) in DC and there were all of 50 people in the building and cost me like $10. You can't get standing room anymore for $10, let alone within 5 feet of the stage.

5. cool . . . im dating myself, but I had the same "early band" experience
in Athens GA in the early 80's at the UG - we used to go to house parties and follow REM from house to house on weekends.

6. Did you ever go to the Wuxtry in Athens?
a combo used records/ comic books store. I worked at the one here in St. Louis around that time.

Big Wally was a great boss and taught me a lot.

4. A friend of mine is going to that show
I am insanely jealus.

I'm going to see Protest the Hero tomorrow though, some more great political music (albeit quite different from Bright Eyes).
