Why do servers crash?
One always hears that a person's server "crashes" under the strain from getting a link from slashdot or a similar popular site. Why is this? I could see not being able to get in because of lack of bandwidth but actually frying a computer like the guy in the beginning of "Scanners"? I don't get it. (As you can tell I'm not a tech guy.)

1. well, you see, new servers are born, and old servers get sick, it's just
the circle of life.

2. a couple different ways
imagine everyone flushing their toilets at once and trying to draw water from a pipe that is fixed in width. Some will not get the water at all, and some will get it very slowly. Too many requests can make a site unreachable (if malicious, it is called a DNS attack).

It can also make the server not respond to anyone and get so overwhelmed that it just decides to shut down.

3. Let me assure you
my toilet is not connected to my computer.

Why would it decide to shut down? It seems that it could concentrate on the few that get through and ignore the rest.

But I'm not a tech guy. I just sit here making smart-ass comments on my internets.

4. it just tries to answer everything. it doesn't prioritize
they all hit the server, it is not programmed to say, ooh - too many, I'll just do this one, it is programmed to respond to every request.

5. At the risk of sounding like a five-year-old...Why?
Couldn't they be programmed differently?
