Why is the cowbell sketch on SNL so funny?
Don't get me wrong, it is hilarious - and I laugh at it every time I see it. But I have no freaking idea why...

It's not the script - the lines aren't that funny. Is it Will Farrell? Is it Christopher Walken?

5. I think it's just that they ...
enthusiastically called them on the cow bell thing. That's why it's funny for me. And Will Ferrel going nuts on the thing is pretty funny, too.

6. Will Farrells belly hanging out for one.
I confess to loving the song, and always wondered before the skit if the cow bell wasn't a tad too much.

And Walken's dead-panning - he's the best.

7. Luck
SNL has become the home of the one joke sketch. Keep doing the same gag over and over again until someone laughs or dies. Usually they just die. But everyonce in a while they hit the right notes and find the right connection and it works. Unfortunately it is not because of good design. It's just dumb luck.

9. I don't think it's that funny.
It was humorous the first time I saw it but it's not hilarious and certainly not classic. Of all the great skits that have been on that show the cowbell skit isn't even top 25.

14. I also don't think it's funny
because the issue of More Cowbell is a serious matter. America would be a better place today if we just had more cowbell.

12. Ah, but you're assuming that we DO think it's funny.
That's got to be established first. Then we can ask why.

16. it's the expressions on their faces and them laughing
in one spot you can see Walkin laughing in the background.

Wil Ferrel was a hoot when his belly popped out etc..

I agree the dialog wasn't so hot it was the players and their reaction.
