I haven't been anywhere near a news source, much less a computer, for the past several days, except momentarily.

What's happened to put us into Defcon 3 today?

Chris Bell didn't originate that. Texas used to be 49th in education, and MS was 50th. So the joke was thank God for MS. Now we're WAY behind MS. Chris has said that line isn't a good thing. He uses it as an intro into fixing our education system.

My objection was that Dems still hold a majority of local and state offices, statewide. His comment really bugged me, because, believe it or not, there are still many, many Dems in Mississippi.

Dems are now Governors of VA and NJ.

California has a bunch of Ahnold propositions to vote down.

Maine voted down an anti gay amendment.

Texas voted for an anti gay amendment.

7. Hey! I'm receiving first responder training...

and am having to put in hours at the firehouse, since I was nominated in our district to receive the training.

And we have had grassfires out the wazoo. Would you believe that, even under a burn ban, dumbasses will STILL argue with you and tell you that they can burn? They shut up when you tell them the fine (and potential jail time) and walk over to the radio to call the sheriff. We used the deluge gun on one fire today...poured 1000 gallons on it. That guy won't be burning for awhile. :D

24. Hopefully, we'll get rain soon, and all of these field and forest fires...

will end.

During the day, there are only two of us responding, so if we get a big fire, we are quite literally fucked.

But it's a blast--riding in fast trucks (I love the Dodge Ram that's outfitted with a 500 gallon tank and hose--it's the most fun to drive!) and putting out fires, many times over the objection of the people who started the fire.

Today we were also called out to put out 11 small fires along a roadway. when we got there, there were three kids with Bic lighters, walking down the road, setting fires as they walked. Little assholes--needed their butts whipped.

Yeah, it's loads of fun. :)

Fortunately, no houses. Thank God.

The last house fire was a couple of days after Katrina, and when we got there, the neighborhood folks were screaming at us that there were "babies" inside. My brother and a couple of other guys suited up in the air paks to go in, only to find out that the neighbors had lied.

I don't go into burning houses. Nope, not me. I'll do any support work at a house fire, but I'm not going in, and it scares the bejeezus out of me when my bro goes in. :scared:

16. We had one guy today tell us that he could burn because...

his supervisor told him he could.

I handed him the list of fines, and told him that his supervisor wasn't in control of who could burn and who could not, that when a burn ban is in effect, NO ONE can burn. His tune suddenly changed. :)

Fifty people gathered around me while we are putting the fire out. One starts screaming at me that I can't put the fire out because the supervisor said he could burn, and then mass hysteria ensues. It was bedlam...I was afraid, but I didn't act like it.

People get pissed when you put out their trash fire or bonfire. :D
