EMMONS, Minn. -- Mervil "Red" and Betty Christian remodeled the inside of their century farm house, but the outside still looks like it did in 1903 when Red's grandfather bought the 160-acre farm.
Red said he wanted to tear down the old house about 40 years ago and build a new one, but the contractor told him the house "was as straight as the day it was built."
So the couple remodeled the house instead, including digging up a foot of the basement's dirt floor and pouring concrete and putting in new doors and windows.
Red pointed out large rocks in the basement -- some more than two feet long and two feet wide -- that were used for the home's foundation...
