Dear Miss Etiquette: Is It Okay To Send Holiday Greeting Cards...
... that have been addressed with computer printed labels?

What if I avoided the use of labels by running the the ENTIRE envelope were run through the laser printer? Would that be any better?

Does it bother you when you receive Holiday Greetings cards from friends and family that resemble (on the outside) the bulk-mail cards you'd also get from your dentist, vet, and real estate agent?

~ Allen

PS: The cards will have a short personal note inside and will be signed by hand, if that makes a difference.

1. I'm not a "Miss" but I do get cards
I don't send cards out because I am a lazy ass, but I do get some and I don't mind when they have printed labels. I have even received greetings made on the computer and that is cool also.

I think most people don't pay attention to that, they just rip it open and see who still likes them enough to send them a card.
Just my thoughts.

2. Not Miss Etiquette here either, but I have addressed my
holiday cards this way for the past 5 years.

If someone doesn't like it, too bad!!!

3. I've gotten cards written on computer before.
And that's considered ok now (though *I* don't think so). As long as the note inside is hand written, I don't see the problem with computer printed address labels.

4. My handwriting blows, so everything I do is computer printed.
If people don't like it, they don't need to get a card. :-)

5. If you want to go by the
letter of the etiquette law, the envelopes should be handwritten too. But these appear to be personal cards going to friends and family, they are not going to care, so I say labels, much earlier.

I recently had to research invitations that would be for an extremely formal dinner party. Got the best information from a declassified government site. Whew, talk about protocol, sheesh! But I was so glad to see that my tax dollars were going for something useful.:sarcasm:

6. Dear Allen,
Miss Etiquette kindly forwarded your letter to me since she thought your question fell more into my bailiwick, so to speak.

I would sooner use a broken crayon than printed labels to address Christmas cards.

First you will need to fashion a quill pen, using a small penknife.
That's why they call them "penknives".
:-)
You will find the easy-to-do instructions here:
http://www.flick.com/~liralen/quills/quills.html

Although the quill from a domestic white goose will suffice in a pinch, the truly superior pen is made from wild Canada (NOT "Canadian"!) Goose feathers. Oh yes...and ONLY the feathers from the inner wing.

If there are no Canada geese nearby, you may find information about goose calls here:
http://www.performancecalls.com/

For ink, I prefer the juices of freshly crushed and strained blackberries, although cranberries make a for a nice seasonal touch at Christmas.

Should you desire to make your own paper for the envelopes, I will cover that in another letter upon request.

My ideal time and location for addressing envelopes:
In a comfortable chair with a hand knitted Alpaca lap robe and lap desk in front of an open fire with a cup of home made egg nog or hot buttered rum near at hand. If you can arrange to have snow gently falling outside, that would certainly help to establish the desired atmosphere for the task at hand.

I hope this has satisfactorily answered your question.
Happy Hollandaise!
Martha

12. only if...
... the insides are bulk printed as well. If it's a mass produced card, or a printed form letter, who cares how it's addressed?

13. It wouldn't bother me if I got printed labels/envelopes.
I'd love it, actually, because I don't ever get any Christmas cards.

Good grief. :(
