My kids school is in lockdown and I'm freaking out a little.
My husband's a firefighter and just called the station but they are out on a call, most likely there - as are 3 different town police departments.

2. Thank goodness it wasn't something more serious
It's always frightening when a school goes to lockdown and parents don't know what's going on.

5. Yes, I'm thankful that it wasn't something more serious but I'm
not happy with how the school handled this. They have not learned from past experience.

3. OMG! How did you find out?
I'm glad there wasn't a problem at the school.

4. This is what pisses me off. 2 years ago we had a lockdown
at the High School because some kid made a Columbine-type threat (it turned out he used up all his sick days and was trying to get another day off).

Anyways - parents freaked out because the kids didn't know why they were being locked down and started calling out on their cell phones.

Parents knew about the lockdown before the principal even knew because he was at an off-site meeting.

So the school bought this robo-call system for $25,000 to make sure parents were alert to events at the HS. They've used it twice - once for a test and the 2nd time to let people know about some school meeting that was going on.

They did NOT use it this morning. They are going to hear from me.

9. That could (rightly) scare a parent to death!
Isn't this what that alert system is for? Why not use it? This kind of stuff makes me really mad. And I'm not even a parent! Grrr!

10. They didn't even tell the Fire Department because they didn't
want the kids to find out they were going to do this.

I wonder what percentage of parents would warn their kids not to bring their drugs to school?

It's insane.

11. Yeah, there's some logic for you.
:eyes: Let's not alert the authorities who might need to know for safety reasons because some kid might find out and not bring his drugs to school and then we won't be able to catch him/her!

13. You have every right to be upset.
Somehow I think it's very important to call parents when there's a lock-down. Everyone worries until they know what the problem is/was.

14. I'm just not sure why they bought the automated call system
if they aren't going to use it in a timely manner.

When I called the school the secretary tried to tell me it was broken until I told her I had previously received two automated calls (this is a new system implemented this school year).

Then 2 hours later I got the call, and a follow up call from the principal.

Now I don't trust the school.

7. "Lockdown" is a prison term
It makes me sick that we now treat our children like monsters.

16. What's infuriarating is that it was really no big deal to my kids.
No wonder why that survey last year showed the majority of kids thought there was a limit to 1st Amendment rights, they're brought up in a society that imprisons them in a school and looks at them as guilty until proven innocent. Yikes.
