The UK government just lost a vote in the House of Commons on its new anti-terror legislation.

This is big news! When a government loses a vote in the Commons, technically the opposition can ask for a vote of No Confidence in the government. (If they were to lose that then a general election must be called).

Now there is no point whatsoever in calling for a vote of No Confidence, because the government would certainly win that (they have a majority of 60), but still, the government losing a vote is dynamite.

I do believe that the 28 day proposal is a good one.....

I also believe that Blair is a much better person than *! But that's neither here nor there, ultimately.....

I think the 28-day proposal is awful. Admittedly, it's better than 90 days, but it still would mean that the police can arrest me and hold me down at the police station for nearly a month without even charging me with anything!

And they'll do it all the time. All this shit from the politicians about "it won't be used except in extreme situations" is just baloney. Give the police that power and they'll use it all the time. During the Labour party conference a couple of months ago, they ejected an octagenarian for heckling during a speech (he said "nonsense") and barred him from coming back in again using anti-terror legislation! This guy was in his eighties, a 2nd world war refugee to boot!

The police routinely arrest people and hold them for 48 hours before even asking them their names. If the detention period really is insufficient, you'd think they'd use the time they do have a bit more efficiently, don't you? No, the police do not need this power.

I am completely opposed to extending the 14-day period to 28 days, because that then becomes the new normality. Next time, if they ask for three months, they may "compromise" on two instead. And then they will be well placed to get three months when they ask again, maybe a year or two down the line.

Basically, I fear my government much more than I fear the terrorists. The terrorists don't have much power over me. Sure, they'd like to kill me, but they only have a very small chance of doing that. The government, on the other hand, has very great power over me. Therefore I do not trust them with the kind of power they are asking for.

You make some extremely compelling arguments, my dear....I had NOT thought it through too well...

It's just one of those things that sounds reasonable on the face of it, until you think about it and then realise that actually it's completely unacceptable.

Trying to be productive after my whoppin' 4 hours of sleep. Am having having a bout of insomnia and did not go to bed until 5:00 am my time. Let myself sleep until 11:00 am, and have been working on reviewing case records since then (plus checkin' the happenings inthe lounge).
