UK Government Loses Vote on Anti-Terror Bill in House of Commons!

Blair defeated on terror bill

� 291 vote for 90-day amendment; 322 against
� 49 Labour MPs rebel
� Commons backs 28-day detention by 323-290
� PM must 'consider position' - Howard

Tony Blair's government tonight suffered its first ever defeat since coming to power, as MPs voted down proposals to allow police to hold terrorist suspects for 90 days without charge.

This definitely shakes Tony Blair's authority. My guess is, this is the beginning of the end for him. He'll be gone soon.

2. It'll be all downhill from now on

He's a dead duck, politically. Should have gone a year ago, but what prime minister does that? It was Enoch Powell who said (one of his wiser statements) that "all political careers end in failure." And so they must, because what leader thinks of quitting when things are going well? So, they either quit after losing an election, or they are pushed by their party, which is always ugly.

For this reason, your term limit on Presidents seems quite wise. Even if the Republicans only did it because they were so pissed at Roosevelt. :)

6. blair, who next

until the war on terror thing, blair has been one of our best primeministers ever. he has a lot of political intelligence even if I dont agree with the direction. its a case of devil you know vs devil you dont.

gordon brown will probably be next primeminister - he is correctly more to the left - but his competence as a leader is unknown. in some ways blair reminds me of germany's Bismark character - with all his many allegiances and contacts and with that, influence beyond the apparant.

7. I don't think Brown is more to the left

It was he who championed the Private Finance Initiative, and forced the same kind of break-up of the London Underground that had caused such problems with our rail network. I don't think Brown is any lefty, he just talks the Labour party's language better than Blair does. I'm not sure there is so much daylight between them at all.
