2. They aggressively carried * water for the Medicaid robbery for big Pharma.
I wouldn't join them if they were across the street giving out hot soup on a cold day.

3. don't do it
Not as long as Bill Novelli is still CEO. He is just another bush-shill. Sold out the AARP members for that felonious drug plan.

That one is funded by the right wing and drug companies.

9. Whaaa??? Darlin', Don't You Remember AARP Boosted Shrub's MediCARE
deal-ly, and tens of thousands of us quit AARP back then. Their president is some kind of p.r. or other sleeze who was behind the Harry-and-Louise commercials against the CLINTON health plan. And I hear that Al FRANKEN's book has a chapter on what AARP's "Real Agenda" is.

Other than that, I'm crushed that I had to be so mean to you here! I try to save that for when you're FLIRTING with EVERYBODY UNDER THE SUN!!!!!!!! In a HUGH!!111 way!!1

Love. I'm OFF to celebrate your birthday----AGAIN!!11

mentioned by most of the others here. I'm not quite old enough yet, 47, but I did take their safe driving course (had to for my job) and got a discount on my insurance because of it.

or wasn't the AARP's strong opposition to Bush's Social Security "reform" one of the main reasons it's pretty much been removed from the White House's agenda?

29. perhaps, but theirs were not
Bush promised in his plans, to leave things unchanged benefits-wise for people over 55. That is, most AARP members. It is AARP which is "America's third rail" - (touch it and you die), not social security. Bush was going to screw the young people, not the seniors. For once AARP acted in a way that benefits young working people, but they did so based on the error which they turned into propaganda, that it would 'screw the seniors'.

21. Cat, I started getting offers last year before my 50th birthday but I....
refuse to join until they make up for caving to the Republicans on the prescription drug bill. They sold out their constituency for 30 pieces of silver and I refuse to give them any support until they've proved to me that they won't let Bush use them for his propaganda again.

Just my two bits, but I won't join just yet.

32. wait a minute...
That is such a small part of the larger picture of what aarp does for seniors. The benefits that you receive from being a member far out-weigh the costs. While we're all here bashing them, lets not forget all the good things that come out of being 50 and being able to join...travel discounts, magazines, discounts for cell phone plans, free legal advise...

Not a bad deal, in my opinion.:nopity:

34. I can get those deals
other places. I did night audit for Holiday Inn Express and gave the senior discount whether or not they had a card - most places will not ask.

I was already pissed with them. In their magazine one month they did a big story on Harley Davidson senior bikers as a feature story. Made a big deal about the pocketa=pocketa sound they make (did you know that Harley actually tried to get a patent on the sound?)

I have tinitus - pretty bad at times - I hate that sound. It just makes it worse for me!

I'm sorry, I don't have a lot of use for them.

BTW, thanks for your post. I had actually been thinking about signing back up until I remembered that.

28. AARP is basically an insurance sales club
If you are getting any literature from them yet, check out the number of insurance companies listed on it.
AARP has turned into a hollow shell run by the insurance companies that backed Bush's attempt to privatize SS.
I refuse to join that hack league of crooks.

30. Nothing wrong with that. I have my car insurance and
my mobile home insurance through AARP. It has saved me a lot of money. Plus, you get discounts on lots of stuff. I got a discount when I had to rent a car and it saved me quite a bit. I would advise anyone when they turn 50 to join.

33. I joined them because they are AGAINST private accounts
Action Alert
http://capwiz.com/aarp/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=5744286

Our Fight to Strengthen Social Security!
Opposition to private accounts grows

Proponents of private accounts are hoping to turn around slipping poll numbers and deteriorating public support with a barrage of advertising and carefully orchestrated events.

Why the panic? Because of hundreds of thousands of people just like you who know the real value of Social Security and have just said "no" to a solution that makes the Social Security problem worse.

Now is not the time for any of us to sit back and claim victory. So contact your Members of Congress again and tell them that the solution shouldn't be worse than the problem - no private accounts with Social Security dollars.

36. There is no escape. You will be assimilated.
I was surprised to discover that I became eligible to join when my husband turned 50 even though I was younger. It wasn't necessary to hit that milestone myself. We thought it sounded reasonable so we joined. We didn't renew because we found out quickly that it wasn't all that good a deal, especially if you have any other kind of discount program. However, we are still on their mailing list. And they are still sending us their magazine. Of course, they are definitely still sending their ads. I think they even outdo the college alumni associations in tracking people down.
