Ballpark cost estimate for replacing motherboard...?
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 06:26 PM by LanternWaste
I recently bought a generic PC from Fry's and it went kablooee about a week ago. Local PC tech said motherboard needed to be replaced. I mucked up the Fry's warranty by adding hardware stick of ram and video card) to it (very repressive warranty since the PC is both generic and inexpensive-- but to my credit, this is the third GQ PC I've bought and the last two are still running fine and dandy- one's five years old)).

Getting into the motherboard universe is kinda alien to me (I'm a Luddite at heart, a professional typesetter only by fiscal neccesity)

Long question short-
What is a ballpark price for cost and labor for a PC tech to replace a motherboard? If it's over $200, I would simply replace it the PC en toto, if it's under $200, it would be more cost effective to replace motherboard

Please don't tell me how easy it would be to replace it myself... I'm sure it is, but see the Luddite coment above

2. If it is under $200 with the tech's charges I would be surprised
You are lucky it is not an HP, which seems to have the highest priced motherboards even though I find them to be crap. I'd have to search for your board, but I would guess it is in the $125 range( but that is jsut a guess, I had one cost $215). A tech charges from 40-100 per hour for a job which will probably have an hour charge. I would guess the whole deal should be about $200, but if that board price is high shop around and check ebay. Good luck.
On a personal note, I miss Fry's. I used to drive down I-5 and hit Fry's in Wilsonville, OR for all this stuff. Now I am on the east coast in NY and there is nothing like Frys near me.

5. Agreed, probably is a micro, could be even less.
Depends on whose brand the orig. motherboard is.

6. IMO, there's no reason to replace it with the same brand
even if it's custom, a generic board is a generic board, it doesn't care what OEM stuff it's running

4. That sounds about right as far as the price range goes.
The other places I suggest to look for a motherboard are:
eBay(don't forget there are still good price saving deals to be had here), Tiger Direct, or Microcenter.com.
Good luck with the search!

9. You can get a decent mobo from $80-150.
If you are daring, it can be quite simple to replace it yourself. I built a new PC from scratch over the summer using little more than instructions I printed online.

11. This motherboard will support everything you have
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121281

It's got your processor support, plus integrated sound. And what a surprise, it costs 86 bucks.

12. Are you real sure about this guy's diagnosis?

With the system specs you indicate, it looks like you were already pushing the envelope on a 250 Watt power supply. When you added the video card that might have been all it could take because video cards can consume a lot of power. Your problem could be a blown power supply or even just a 25 cent fuse.

15. Thanks.
I bought it and asked for it as advertised, so there really weren't any questionable sales tactics. I know 128 isn't too much, but it has slots for another stick and I happen to have a 512 stick to slap in there, so while it may not be some screamin' gaming machine, it's more than enough for surfing, word processing and typesetting.

Seeing as how the system cost less than $200 bucks, it's the third system of the brand I've bought, I think I'm still coming out ahead on this one.

Thanks.

14. Thanks for the input, guys...
Thanks for the input, guys. I didn't want to be duped into some outrageous charge.

Got off the phone with the techie this morning and he told me it was the motherboard, and that the replacement mobo will cost app. $45 as will labor-- I figure $90 bucks ain't too bad.

So, that coupled with finding my cellphone in the floorboard of the car has gotten me into a pretty damn good mood this morning.

Thanks again!
