Anyone want to bolster my fading day? I face surgery at 8:30 AM.
For the curious, it's a polypectomy of the uterus. I'm pretty scared but have to give up control to doctors and nurses and operating room technology. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight -- darn it...

I'm going to use a small disk player with electronic music and affirmations created by Linda Rodgers, a licensed clinical social worker and daughter of Richard Rodgers of the musical team of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Here's her biography:
http://www.rnh.com/org/index.php?page=biographies&person_id=289

I heard about her years ago and have used her music on cassette tape for two other surgical procedures that used local anesthesia.

1. Listen to me, when I had my brain tumor removed
I promised myself I would wake up to see the smiling faces of my wife and daughter, and I would stand THAT EVENING no matter what they said I could or could not do.

I did both.

Stay strong, remember why we are here, and know that we love you and will worry about you until you tell us otherwise.

BE STRONG and YOU WILL COME BACK TO US!

4. Your screen name tells it all! You must have a really good sense
of humor!

When I signed the final papers authorizing the doctor to do what he has to do, I forgot about looking at the terrible possible outcomes. Tonight, I looked. It was not a good choice...

As the comedian Shelley Berman used to say about airline insurance, "I'm not afraid of death... it's just the word MAIMED that gets to me!"

Peace and goodnight.

2. My dear Radio_Lady!
YOU WILL BE FINE!

Your music sounds like a very good idea.......

As a retired RN, I can tell you that the OR and RR nurses all know their jobs extremely well......

I know that you will come out of this without mishap, my dear...

Try not to worry....and let us know when you get home, all safe and sound!

3. Best wishes and my thoughts are with you!!!
I'm sure you will do great, though - is anyone accompanying you to the surgery? How long do you have to stay in the hospital?

Anyway - here's one person pulling for you! Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about it.

8. Husband will accompany me -- it's done as an outpatient procedure.
I assume I will be out of there by noon, hopefully. Then I have to wait until Nov. 23 for biopsy results. The chance of serious complications are very small, but with the new types of diagnostic tests, I guess I have to do this. Like my husband said, "The genie's out of the bottle. I can understand why the doctor wants to do this to eliminate anything serious."

17. I was actually at the same hospital today to accompany my hubby
to see an allergist. So we got a quick run-through and hubby will be driving tomorrow morning. I'm taking some pre-op anti-anxiety meds --the time was set back 45 minutes from 6:30 AM -- just arrive at 7:15 AM and surgery at 8:30 AM.

5. You'll be OK
Keep your head up and think positive. I just had a gastro and a colonoscopy and I too was scared. I face gallbladder surgery in the very near future and believe me I'm still scared.

Let us know how you are afterwards.. I know you'll be fine. Trust the docs and the nurses, they're there for you. If you are REALLY scared, mention this to your anesthesiologist and he'll give you something before hand to help calm your nerves.

Good luck !!

18. Yes, I spoke with the head anesthesiologist and told her about
my anxiety. I think they use Versed and can keep you just sedated but not completely asleep. I don't think this procedure should really hurt a lot; the Internet suggests some doctors do it in their offices with just a local (cervical) anesthetic.

I have refused spinal anesthesia; didn't want to get involved with that at all.

THANKS FOR THE HUGS, AND I'M GOING TO WATCH SOME TV NOW.

36. Versed is amazing
Down right Star Trek stuff. Just *POOF* and a whole chunk of time goes away, even though you were conscious for the whole time.

You live in civilization. You're a good person. Things will be OK.

And your first meal after will be bliss. It's the upside of the NPO after midnight thing.

We await your return.

6. I would tell you that it is a piece of cake and you shouldn't worry...
but if I were you, I wouldn't listed to someone I didn't know. I have assisted in this procedure and you will do just fine. Giving up the control is the hardest part, but try not to think about the procedure itself and just focus on the positive outcome afterwards. The procedure won't take any time at all and before you know it, it will all be over.

11. Appreciate your remarks. We've just had a big expose of just one
doctor who worked for this HMO and seriously hurt and killed dozens of people here and in Australia, while his employers did nothing. Colleagues even wrote glowing letters of recommendation for this guy.

The morning newspaper broke the story this week -- I wish the timing had been different. "Medical malpractice" and "medical mistakes" are really so scary. My doctor says he does these procedures all the time; I was unfamiliar with how much gynecology had advanced in the past few decades since my children were born in the late 60s.

I guess this is the "one rotten apple can spoil a barrelful" newspaper story, but there is really no way to examine a doctor's background or even get any references.

13. Good suggestion, KitchenWitch. This is such a great way to spend
the evening. I have a vanilla candle burning and some nice music playing. Hubby is looking for some movie or TV show that's uplifting to watch until I go to bed. I had to turn off the news -- too upsetting for me. Except for the Democratic wins last night! Hooray!

I have had similar procedures done...it will be over before you know it. Make sure you rest well for the next week or so. Any kind of procedure requiring anesthesia really takes it out of you!

Having had several surgeries myself, I understand the fear you feel. I think you have a good plan for helping you to relax, and to think positively about it.

I will send you positive thoughts, not only for the surgery itself, but for the results of the biopsy.

23. I've had several procedures done under Versed.
One aspect of the drug is supposed to be that it causes you to forget what the doctors do to you. I don't know if this is true. I do know that I wake each time with no negative thoughts or emotional aftereffects from whatever I've had done. I'm at the point now where I lose no sleep over going in for an outpatient procedure. Unless it's a colonoscopy, and that has everything to do with the stuff you have to drink the night before. Put your mind at ease. And sleep well.

27. I had surgery about a year ago, a colonoscopy and biopsy,
local anesthetic. I was a high as a kite, but they did let me watch the tv screen showing my innards. It was as cool as hell. I convinced myself that the polyps they removed were tumors, but it was obvious I hadn't been to medical school, as the surgeon kind of laughed it off.

I had an angiogram once too. That was very cool. You get to watch your own heart beat, every chamber live and on screen. All of the patients in my ward were more or less informed of serious conditions or impending death, but I was told basically never to bother a cardiologist again.

I also was in a coma for several days, and had my lungs reinflated up and my head reassembled in the rear. But I don't remember that one.

The point is that I'm I'm perfectly fine, and the only residual I have of any of it is my bemusement.

I'm sure you'll be OK. Good luck. Relax. It's something new and different.

28. Radio Lady, healing thoughts go out to you tonight
I think the disk player is a great idea.

The last time I had to have something out :scared:, the group of doctors and nurses in the operating room stopped everything they were doing when I arrived. They clustered around the bed, holding my hands, and the surgeon said, "Julie, this is going to go perfectly, and you are going to be fine." That was the last thing I remember before waking up in recovery. They were right. My recovery was faster than I could have dreamed.

I hope that the doctors and nurses at your hospital believe in positive suggestion, too, and I'll be thinking those good thoughts for you tomorrow, too.

Julie

30. Hi, Radio Lady. I had major surgery a few years ago. Here's what I did:
I believe that what you tell yourself is what your subconscious takes into the operating room. So, what I did is to keep repeating softly to myself, and calmly, "Successful surgery, fast recovery, excellent health." It was sort of a mantra. I think the attendants who wheeled me into the OR were a wee bit perplexed as to what I was saying under my breath, though, LOL.

Believe it or not, I had one of the fastest recoveries for my operation on record. I won't go into the details because I'm signing off, but I saw your post and wanted to let you know that everything is going to be absolutely fine. You've got the right attitude and you know what you need. Just let your subconscious work for you while the doctors take care of you.

Blessings and light. :hi:

Radio Lady  :loveya: Having lost count of the number of surgeries I have had in my life (and I'm only 24), I know very well what it's like in the lead up to surgery. But just keep calm, think positive thoughts and remember that it will all be over soon. Allow yourself to get distracted -talk to your husband or other family and friends to take your mind off things.

All the best. Once again, my deepest and most profound and sincere prayers, thoughts, positive vibes and good wishes go with you

40. I've Had Several - Not Fun, But No Biggie
I have the true paradoxical reaction to Versed (which is very very very rare - won't happen to you!) so mine were done "live" - with an audience, since I was uninsured when I had cancer so was a patient at the teaching hospital with many many students watching. There's a lot of clamping and pinching, but it's over sooner than it seems like it'd be. Not fun, but not terrible. Yours will be ... okay!

I've also had an endometrial ablation, so if you have any questions about those, just ask!
