6. I agree. I know some people who feel he is though.
I like his art, but like I said earlier, some of it is a bit redundant.

7. You have to look at him as more than producing artifacts
he was one of the first to play the media as art. An early performance artist. Did a lot to define what we consider to be "celebrity" Had a lot of influence all over the place. Made a lot of hay out of "irony"

8. Yeah, I guess there is more to him that just his "art".
Or better, his art is more than just the picture. Isn't there a movie about him? Maybe I should watch it.

14. Films about Warhol
Most recent documentary about Warhol

Andy Warhol - The Complete Picture
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0324548/

documentary from 1990 with David Bowie playing Warhol:

Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103008/

Biopic of Valerie Solanis who did exactly as the title suggests (google "SCUM manifesto" to read why):

I Shot Andy Warhol
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116594/

Biopic of Basquiat, a graffiti artist "discovered" by Warhol

Basquiat
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115632/

There's also several documentaries about his 'Superstars', and as I say below, you must see Ciao! Manhatten - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068379/

10. I'd have to have a seance to raise him from the dead...
for him to paint it for me. Maybe we can try that AFTER we do the rain ritual.

11. I liked his point about mass manufactured culture.
But really, he didn't need to make his point with every piece of work he ever made. He could've very easily moved on to other subjects. I don't know why modern artists have an overwhelming desire to obsess over one point. Sadly, their point usually isn't even all that good.

12. I think he's utterly fascinating
& an extremely important figure in the 20th century. To be honest, like Marcel Duchamp, I find his art more interesting conceptually than in practice. That said, some of the 'Marilyn's are great aesthetically and aside from some clips from Screen Test I haven't seen any of his films.

Then there's the whole Factory scene, The Velvet Underground, his 'Superstars' (especially the tragic Edie Sedgwick - if you haven't seen Ciao! Manhatten you must), the "philosphy" book, the horror films he 'produced' and then not forgetting the eccentricities of his life.

17. I like his work, but it doesn't hold my attention for very long.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:21 PM by Dangerously Amused

Which I think is what he intended, part of the "message." That's the funny thing. I'm not a big fan of modern art, or of pop art. I'm a much bigger aficionado of Renaissance work. But I still have difficulty sometimes distinguishing between secondary renaissance painters, whereas I always know a Warhol when I see it. So, I respect that while he may not have ventured into other artistic realms, he certainly did make a name for himself in his little niche. And he took an important place in art history because of it.

Edit: Spelling. "aficionado" got me.
