A question for the men
My husband and I are in our 50's. We own (but don't live on) eight acres of semi cleared land in No. FL. It is prime hunting land with deer, dove, quail and turkey. The land is posted. We don't hunt.

My husband goes NUTS... I mean ballistic... if he even senses someone has been on the land hunting. He found some decoys and I seriously thought he would stroke out on me.

Now, is this some testosterone male territorial thing? Because I personally don't care. I mean I don't want them hunting while I am there, of course, but we don't get out there all that much. But hunting is usually at dawn and twilight and we are NEVER there then.

So, guys...what do you think? How would YOU feel about this?

1. I'm a hunter.
And I respect your husband's freak.

If the landowners want no hunting, no problem.

If the owner says no hunting, then dammit, there's no hunting.

Decoys = cheating.

25. Plus...
Having who knows "who" hunting on your land, and the actions of those hunters...who knows who those guys are, maybe they will unload some rounds and end up doing some damage, or fatal damage on accident...I understand what he is going through...i only got 5 acres, and i deal with the same thing....

2. I'd lose it too.
Since it's not land specifically designated for hunting, how do these morons with guns know that you and your husband aren't out and about at dawn and twilight? That sort of indifference to the safety of others is disgusting.

3. Here's an idea...Next to your "Posted" signs put signs that say
"Smile! You're on camera!"

These days cameras are everywhere. Those sins might just freak out the poachers (And in my opinion, thats what they are if they are hunting where it is posted they shouldnt) enough to stay away.

Just a thought

BTW...I'd be pissed too

4. His reactions are a sign of his attachments to how he manages the land.
Also possibly some control issues. All normal given the situation. I wonder if he isn't getting outraged at other issues at the same time, hence, the amount of rage which seems more than the situation might warrant. Just a thought. Kudos for the two of you for preserving the land.

5. I recently sent a demand letter ...
... to a company that drove a truck through my back yard. I live in the city, and a house is being built on a once-vacant lot behind my house. A construction company truck drove through my back yard to unload materials, and I was really mad.

But my wife was mad too. I asked for her approval before sending the demand letter. It might be a testosterone thing. Mainly it's just that men have to stand up for their rights (or so we've been taught, by our mothers, I would add). If we don't stand up for ourselves, women will perceive us as "weak" and we will be unable to get the love and affection we need.

just my 2 cents ...

6. I don't think it's territorial. The land is posted, there should be no
hunting, period. It would seem to me like putting a "No public restroom" on your front door, and then having people traipsing in to use your bathroom, just to spite you.

7. I also hunt.
Posted land is posted land, and I would expect any landowner to freak about it.

I would.

I don't think it's so much a pee-marking territory thing, but a respect problem.

8. Whatever it is...

.... I share it.

We have 40 acres in north Texas near OK. We go there most weekends. We have deer, turkey, dove, a stocked pond, etc.

One time we were walking along a creek bed and found a shell placed on a cedar-juniper branch. This is a "tell", to see if a deer walked by and knocked it off.

I started looking around and sure enough there were footprints that were not mine.

Yeah, I was majorly pissed off to put it mildly. As far as I'm concerned, you might as well have walked into my house when I wasn't there. It is not OK. My land is well posted with signs, and I feel sorry for any son of a bitch I find on it. :)

9. Your husband has every right to be upset.
Those who trespass on posted land give legitimate hunters a bad name. Part of hunting is being able to read and respect a frigg'n sign.

10. Put up a no trespassing sign
people can be ticketed for that. Here in Texas it will probably get you shot but I wouldn't go that far.

11. If it is your property the hunters shouldn't be there.
So if it was me, I wouldn't feel comfortable.

12. Call the Sheriff,
and the game warden. I had to do this on property that people actually "cleared" in some woods behind me, on our land...came right up on the property and cut some trees for "shooting" lanes. No problem with your husband as far as I'm concerned.

19. Man, you started out with one post tonight,
and already at 51. I'll tell you though, I've got to get some sleep. You aren't one of those who are back here with a new moniker are you? You sound so much like a veteran around here?

13. I'm with your husband
And I've been hunting. Anyone on your property without your permission is trespassing.

Just wait until you find an errant arrow or bullet resting near your house, and you'll realize how serious this is. It should be your decision whether or not people are on your property.

You should also post signs at the border, since some people might not realize they're on your land.

15. He has every right to be angry:
My wife and I own some land that we also live on. We have hunting land all around us. We have signs posted on our property stating you know, stay the hell off our property. I found a deer stand recently on our property, we don't hunt, I am a vegetarian for God's sake. Anyway, I ripped it down and took it to the local dump. I am now much more active about checking my property out a few times a week. People have no respect.

20. Eight acres isn't that much, and private property should be private
I think if people are trespassing to kill things on your land, that's serious. If there were poachers after your dog on your land that'd be serious, too.

23. Well, I can see why...
Cause even if you post No Hunting and someone goes on your property and hunts and should happen to shoot or kill someone, you can bet your bottom dollar that some attorney would be adding you to the lawsuit....

24. Also, people who trespass on your land to hunt could also
trespass to plant herb. And you'd be liable if you didn't know.

So be careful. And post No Trespassing signs as much as possible. And make regular visits to your property to make sure everybody sees you there.
