The potatoes are the most important part of any breakfast.
The judgment of any given breakfast is directly related to the availability and quality of the breakfast potatoes. The eggs could be perfect, the bacon/sausage/meat substitute could be sublime, but if the hash browns are weak, the entire breakfast stumbles.

Pizza crust plays a similar role with pizzas. A good pizza crust forgives any number of sauce and topping sins. And NY style, which gains points for its ease in consumption, cannot match up with the heartier Chicago deep dish.

I think I need to eat dinner.

2. If potatoes were available
but not grits, you would order breakfast.

However, if grits were available but not potatoes, the average American would consider the other available menu items.

I rest my case.

3. Are You Suggesting ....
Are you suggesting that breakfast could be eaten without grits? Certainly not.

4. Let me be clear
Grits eaters would accept potatoes as a substitute. The reverse would not be true.
