I've alwasy kind of liked malls because of the food courts and the people watching possiblities, but I never knew my life would involve so many mall visits. Where I live, in the UAE, supermarkets are usually located in malls, so I go a lot. So does everyone else here. Most malls are gorgeous, with entertainment places for kids. I know some people hate malls and shopping in general, but in the UAE malls make sense because of the horrific heat for many months of the year. FOr those hot months, you go from inside to your car as quickly as possible, and sweat and huff and puff miserably until the AC starts working. There are no outdoor activies during this time, so everyone goes to the malls. Near the beginning of Ramadan, we went to the grocery store in the City Centre mall in Ajman, and we watched Whirling Dervishes outside of the food court for a while. On the second day of EID, we tried to go to the Sahara Center, along with half of Sharjah. We went to a less crowded mall to shop, but it was still hopping with people. Mostly Indians, Pakistanis, and some Arabs, who still stare at us like we are a curiosity when we visit this mall. Yesterday we went to a mall made to look like a souk, and then to the Mall of the Emirates, which is, I think, the second largest mall in the world. Anyway, it's huge. I see people from all over the world, even the occasional American. Americans always suprise me when I see them here, because they don't seem to care much to talk to other Americans.
Sometimes I get a little tired of the mall crawling, but I'm in luck now because it is finally cool enough to go to the beach, or walk in a park, or just hang out outside. My visits to malls will probably be cut back to once a week for food shopping, at least until I do my Christmas shopping.
