What are YOU doing this fine Saturday morning??
I am happily in my recliner, listening to Lester Holt (I actually LIKE him), drinking coffee. Got my laptop going, checking my DU posts and mail, seeing if anybody is up.

Got IM going and talking to both kids at once. One lives down the street, the other one is "war-riding" in his ambulance, which he tells me means he is hanging out in hot spots for HIS laptop. He waits, he has explained, for "people to have a really bad day." I'm proud of him. He's saved a lot of lives. My daughter is home with two babies, 2 and six weeks. She's got her hands full!

And...I've got a little UB poker game goin' in the corner of the screnn. Just the dollar tables, no biggie. I'm up 17 bucks. I had a straight flush a few minutes ago.

It's nice and cool here in Tallahassee. The 'Noles play Clemson up there, so there's that to look forward to. And my grandson turned two this week and his party is this PM. Sponge Bob theme, man! Sponge Bob cake, plates, napkins, pinata, and even a string of Sponge Bob lights!

How about you?

1. I'm about to take my wife to the airport.....
5:45am here in Seattle and Mrs. Tripper is headed your way actually. She's flying into Tampa and then driving up to Thomasville Ga. where she's from to deal with some family matters.
She worked in Tallahassee for an attorney years ago when we met online and moved to Seattle.

29. I used to teach World History in addition to German
Edited on Sat Nov-12-05 10:10 AM by Left_Winger
but now, because of NCLB, I am no longer "highly qualified" to teach world history (which includes world cultures, art history, etc). I am somewhat ticked-off by this as I have a Ph.D. in history. The Education Dept. is more interested in those of us who can teach foreign languages as our skills are deemed "critical needs" and there is a shortage of language teachers in my state. Luckily, the state curriculum plan calls for history and culture of the target language to be taught.

Even after I add Social Studies (History) to my license, I will still remain the German teacher because of the needs of my district. Oh well, such is life.

I do have diligent students (for the most part) and I do enjoy teaching and working with young people; it helps me to retain my youthful approach to life.

that someone with a PHD in history doesn't reach the bureaucratic standard? Seems unfair. Many teachers are excellent, despite their official qualifications and some are bad with many qualifications.

Sometimes quantifying everything leads to a great loss of creativity, IMO.

30. Hey TallahasseeGrannie
I am glad you dedided to stay. In your honor:
(I hope you like it)although I hope not sure about the location of it all?

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day.
I was out chopping cotton and my brother was baling hay.
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat.
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet,"
And then she said "I got some news this morning from Choctaw Ridge,"
"Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

And Papa said to Mama as he passed around the black-eyed peas:
"Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please."
"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow."
And Mama said it was a shame about Billy Joe, anyhow.
Seems like nothing ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge.
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe,
Had put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show.
And wasn't I talking to him after church last Sunday night?
"I'll have another piece of apple pie; you know it don't seem right.
"I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge,
"And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

And Mama said to me: "Child, what's happened to your appetite?
"I've been cooking all morning and you haven't touched a single bite.
"That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today.
"Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way.
"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge.
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing something off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe,
And brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo.
There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring.
And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything.
And me, I spend a lot of time picking flowers up on Choctaw Ridge.
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

42. Thanks, Wild
That song is so evocative of my younger years! I think the actual bridge is in Mississippi, but the whole sharecropper experience is alive and well as history around here. My mother's ancestors were all FL pioneers who settled in Jackson Co., FL.

I'm a genealogy buff and one little tidbit I discovered is that my maternal great-grandfather fathered children by three different sisters. He was married to one. Another one was married to a fellow who traveled a lot (my ancestor). The other was an unmarried woman and THAT was the real scandal. Really makes that side of the family convoluted in real backwoods sort of way!

52. Hi!
Not very active this morning, but I'm doing some early Christmas shopping. I was reading the Philly Inquirer. Rating for Madonna's Confessions On A Dance Floor was too low (2.5/4 stars when it should get an A,) but the sports section was good, with mid-season grades for the Eagles.

Here are my mid-season Eagles grades:

Quarterback - C- (McNabb's been injured, but that doesn't explain poor decision making)

Running back - D+ (most of Westbrook's yards have been receiving; little help elsewhere)

Offensive line - D (no run blocking at all)

Defensive line - D (they just are not getting to the quarterback)

Linebackers - C (only Trotter has played well)

Secondary - D+ (too many big plays allowed, many of them on 3rd and long)

Special teams - D (one shining moment in the San Diego game; hardly any return yards; short kickoffs; average field goal kicking)

Coaching - D- (4-4 record and last place in the NFC East. No adjustments or control of the team.)
