What are some important lessons you learned at a very young age?

When I was probably 7 or 8 my mother taught me that businesses/corporations don't actually give a crap about me, they only care about themselves. When I was lulled by McDonald's promise that "We Do It All For You", she told me that they in fact did it all for their profits. That lesson has stuck with me since then and made me impervious to the allure of advertising and marketing come ons.

What is one or more important lesson you learned very young?
