What's the expected lifespan of a DVD?

What's the expected lifespan of a DVD?

I mean, how many times can you expect to watch one? The last few DVDs we've received from Netflix have been in bad shape. They have to be replaced at some point, don't they?

I've heard something like 25~30 years depending on how it's stored.

I've never believed this "100 years" talk...

But scratch the label side and the disc is done for. (it can survive some scratches, but the data is on the top part - the least protected side, go figure.)

Besides, Blu-ray will be out in a couple of years and they'll stop making existing DVDs and compel you to upgrade. Once again.
