Chicago coffeeshop owner who makes kids behave = x3 business increase
http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20051113-071645-9530r

A Chicago restaurant has gotten two results from a sign telling children to behave -- fewer unruly kids and an increase in sales.

Dan McCauley, the owner of A Taste of Heaven on the city's north side, said he was tired of kids yelling and climbing on his furniture, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The sign which reads: "Children of all ages have to behave and use their indoor voices when coming to A Taste of Heaven." It gained national media attention and prompted some angry moms to call a boycott.

Not everyone heeded the boycott. McCauley said the exposure has led to a three-fold increase in business.

McCauley said he just wants some courtesy. He said he doesn't like cell phones being used in his restaurant either.

Flame away.

1. Oh, goody! Let's start another flamefest about kids in restaurants!
Just what we need.

2. Why flame?
This is the way to handle it. Other places, like say Friendly's, can cater to those who have kids that are at a "difficult age".

4. What I wonder...
"Children of all ages have to behave and use their indoor voices when coming to A Taste of Heaven."

Why would anyone get pissed at a request like that? It's common courtesy.

7. Indeed.
Some, however, interpret it as an indictment of their parenting skills.

8. EXCELLENT
Trixie's offspring will have to be rude elsewhere. So much for the lame argument that the store owner would HURT his store and be a customer of one. :D

Even though I haven't yet (knocks on wood) had a problem with my kid at a restaurant, if I want to go to a nice restaurant I don't take my child.
On the flip side, if I have to take my child I go somewhere that is children friendly.

Just common courtesy. Some places are for quiet adult time. If kids can't respect that then they don't belong there.

10. Teaching Children Public Manners Is Being A Good Parent
Children who act out in public are disrepecting the people around them. Letting children act this way is telling them that other people's feelings don't matter. Acting respectfully at the table is something that should be taught in the home. If your kids don't have manners, then don't take them out in public.

11. That's where I would go, if I lived in Chicago
It sounds like a great idea. There's nothing wrong with expecting children to be on a little better behavior when they are out in public.

12. No such thing as bad publicity
Doesn't matter what they say about you, as long as they mention your name.

18. I just posted the following sign in my shop as a joke today
"Unattended children will be given an espresso and a free puppy."

 I typically don't have a problem with the small fry. There's not a lot in my store that can get broken. I have had, however, a couple of notable exceptions.

You could also hand out candy. That's what I did when I had children's choirs. Rile them up, then send them home.

29. Children should be seen
and not heard.

Don't know how often I heard that one whilst growing up. We were in a small town though and if we were obnoxious our folks knew about in .0000001 seconds!

30. But little Britney and Dalton need to express themselves freely!
Just kidding. I think children should be isolated and studied, to prevent their spreading.
