List your favorite DU taboo topics here.....
Until today, I managed to keep my opinion to myself on the big DU lounge flame wars. I never gave my two cents on favorite chicken coatings(for the record, corn flakes are a great coating for fried chicken). I didn't watch 'Fat Actress' (Kristie Alley isn't funny ).

Also, for the record , Jeff Probst TALLIES the votes.

I did, however, have to chime in on the 'Are Humans meant to eat meat' thread. It's one of those topics that I have a strong opinion on.

So, my fellow DU'ers...what topics get to you?

1. You summed them up pretty well,
I mainly stay out of the real flamefests, and later take a poor-humor stab at making fun of them by combining a bunch.

That goes for here, at work - anywhere.

I don't think I posted in those you mentioned either.

17. agreed. I didn't post in those threads either
I don't care if people are "fat." I don't care for the bullshit American ideal of anorexic--think it's shallow, stupid, and unhealthy.

I don't give a damn how someone fries their chicken.

and on and on and on-----

3. There was a FLAME war over CHICKEN coatings?
Did anyone archive that?

BTW, cornmeal is really good. mmm. Corn Flakes, good as well. I love my fried chicken with some sort of corn coating.

Mmm...corn...

4. Cats...feral cats, especially - the ULTIMATE vermin
about as harmful as it's possible for any mammal to be, yet there are actually people who FEED the creatures. It boggles the imagination. How's that for a taboo topic?

I, personally, would never have my cat declawed, but I can see why some folks would have to do it.

20. How's this...
...my mom will capture these flea ridden vermin, pay to get them neutered, and then release them back into the wild!

But maybe it's all for the best, sort of like spreading sterile fruitflies around to reduce the population.

(Oh boy, I hope she doesn't see this...)

21. How horrible...just IMAGINE how many millions of songbirds perish
because of this absurd, misguided habit. Cats will hunt for fun, even if they're not hungry. If only they could be limited to English sparrows, starlings, and other non-native species, it would be OK, but that's certainly not the case. A breeding program for coyotes might do the trick, however; I understand coyotes like to feast on cats. I'd contribute to it!

28. Well, I'd say humans are about as harmful as it's possible for any
mammal to be.

Anyway, it's not the cats' fault that humans are stupid and don't take care of them ... leading to feral colonies.

Cats also keep the rat population down.

8. Weird!
Gravy and fried chicken seemingly go together, but now that I think about it, it would be very difficult to get drippings for the gravy.

My mind is blown!

Fried Chicken is sort of a finger food, so everything else I have with the meal is a finger food, too. Like corn on the cob.

19. Yeah I might have to start diversifying.
I definatly do no-gravy fried chicken on the 4th of July, so there is one chance. (of course onion rings and fried fish get corn flakes!)

Sorry to go on a tangent but it was one of those random things...

I always feel a need to jump in on topics having to do with my life: cattle, meat, agriculture, biology/ecology etc. There are a lot of misconceptions (about everything, really) but when it is about something I might even be considered an expert on I can't seem to help myself. I have no problem with folks who choose not to eat meat, hell I believe the western diet is too high in protien overall, but I dislike it when folks try to use overly emotional arguments like animal cruelty and mad-cow in such a general and uninformed way as arguments for trying to convice others that their way is the only true way. It's down-right rebulican-like. Even the gross, "cruel" factory farming practiced in this country is pretty safe and relatively healthy if you don't overinduldge, but my issue is that there are a LOT of alternatives out there, a lot of small farms and ranches trying to give folks what they say they want, yet who actually puts their money where there mouths are? It takes a little extra effort to eat more sustainably, and when you get folks spouting off with exaggerations or untruths about animal care and disease, that they obviously know very little about, potentially scaring folks away from even trying alternatives it hurts those folks trying to be more sustainable - they are not only struggling with a system that favors scale, regulations that are designed for that scale and not the small family farm, nevermind the slim margins ag exists on anyway, but then ignorant scare-mongers lump them into the (incorrect) generalizations in their holier-than-though rants about the mainstream.

27. I don't consider my opinion's 'rants'
I appreciate that you are trying to convince me that things are a certain way while at the same time telling me it is wrong for me to try to convince people things are another way.

I'm a biology nerd, too. Took the AP in high school and all the stuff in college. Even gots me my own cadaver in skool! Now I can google-slap you with all the reasons I CHOOSE to not eat red meat or BUY organic meat for $5.99-$21.99 a pound(yes, I know where to buy the crap :eyes: )...or you can do you own research into how disease spreads and compare it to what the FDA does(what is it? 1 and 1600 cows are inspected?..hmm...I got an 'A' in statistics, too!).

36. Apologies
In terms of rants, I wasn't thinking of you. Of course you are entitled to your opinion. The risk of expressing opinions on a public forum, however is that sometimes the discussion turns to the rationalizations made to form them. I do think you are mistaken about some things. For instance what do you mean inspected? Or do you mean tested? That would be something I would probably agree with you - I think we should have 100% testing for BSE, but then as you know, statisically there is still a chance something will slip past.

Either way, I am NOT trying to convince you or anybody else they have to eat meat. Only that for those who likewise CHOOSE to do so that there are alternatives to the mass produced factory grown model. I do try to inject common sense and provide factual information both to folks asking questions and whenever I encounter error or omission.

Return the shopping cart? Bring it to the cart corral? Or just leave it?

Should parents of only one child be allowed to use the "fun" car-shaped carts that are designed to fit two or three children?

Should children be allowed in the back of the cart?

Should children over one year old be allowed to ride in the front of the cart?
