What is the greatest Rolling Stones Song?
The Rolling Stones are in my hometown. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to one of the shows, but it has me thinking...what is the greatest Stones song of all time? What song best represents the essence of the Stones?

For me, only two songs are even in competition....Can't Get no Satisfaction and Sympathy for the Devil. I choose Sympathy for the Devil because I think it's more refined, and dare I say, tasteful....

1. Well, I must thank them for Satisfaction.
Without which, Devo couldn't have deconstructed it.

Having said that, I kinda like Emotional Rescue.

2. For sheer infectious groove
and loose pocket playing that is a good part of their "essence" for me, I'd say Tumblin Dice.

Can't Always Get What You Want is a pretty kick ass arrangement of a solid song.

But putting it all together my fave is probably still Gimme Shelter.

4. Agree with darkstar
Gimme Shelter still sounds great after all these years.
2nd choice for me is Sympathy for the Devil.

7. So did I!
I was at the Anaheim Stadium show a few days ago. It kicked ass, easily THE best concert I've ever been to. I mean after the Stones, how is it possible to top that?

10. Ah of course! U2
U2, while I dont have a lot of their studio stuff, is one band that's WAY high on my list of bands to see live.

But... the only thing that could top THAT would be Paul McCartney. And I did get to see him last Friday!

I'm actually gonna be seeing U2 in about 16 hours from now.

As for Sir Paul, his solo stuff is way too MOR for my tastes

51. I love "Coming Down Again"
It's good to see somebody else actually mention that one. Some of my other favorites are "Out of Time", "Sway", "Wild Horses", "Street Fighting Man", "Gimme Shelter", "Heart of Stone", "Tell Me", "No Expectations", "Let's Spend the Night Together", "Dandelion", "I Got the Blues", "Under My Thumb", and "As Tears Go By." (And those are just off the top of my head, so I'm sure I'm leaving out some obviously great ones.)

42. Great song, not a great rock and roll song
Does it make folks want to shake their hips and knock boots? I think not. Numerous songs do that better, like Chuck Berry's Oh Carol.

22. All Down the Line
from Exile on Main Street, with Rocks Off, and Tumbling Dice.

The whole Beggars Banquet record, one of their very best.

Honky Tonk Women
Jumping Jack Flash
19th Nervous Breakdown
Time is on My Side
Paint It Black
Satisfaction
Sympathy for the Devil
Monkey Man
Brown Sugar
Connection
Under My Thumb, as politically incorrect as it might be
Get Off of My Cloud
Route 66, their version.

I could go on, and on.

26. Man, I didn't need to hear that.
I only own a few Stones CDs, and almost all of them are live-recorded albums: Flashpoint, Steel Wheels, and Live Licks. Love 'em. Beggar's Banquet is the only studio-made Stones album I have, and I hate it. It sounds like they took a bunch of cool songs and remixed them for playing in a dentist's office. If that's how they always play when they're not in front of an audience, I'm not buying any more of their CDs.

52. Gimme Shelter IMHO,
but the whole Mick Taylor period (Let It Bleed through It's Only Rock 'n' Roll) is so rich in great songs that it's hard to say. I also love "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'", "Time Waits for No One," "Monkey Man," "Brown Sugar" and so many more. The loathesome "Angie" is a minus, though. Mick trying to sing cloying and romantic is enough to make me blow cookies.

Of the earlier stuff, "Paint It Black", "Satisfaction" and "She's a Rainbow" are plenty cool.
