My dog whisper barks at night-awoke me at 3:30am
then all 75lbs of him sat on me to get me up. There was a loud clanging sound outside. One of the eaves had partially blown down and was hitting the side of the house. Lucky for us, it was hanging outside the upstairs hallway window and we were able to grab it and pull it down the rest of the way before a window got broken.

Does anyone else's dog whisper bark? Makes me wonder if he's being "polite" or if he's just so scared that he's whispering to wake me up to protect him from the big bad noise.

Either way, he's getting an extra special treat today.

1. Awww!
That sounds SO sweet! I'd like to think he was "whisper barking" to try to wake you up politely because there was a strange noise out there that needed investigating. What a great dog!

3. You're right, he's turned out to be a really great dog.
We've had him just about 5 months. We'd noticed before that he only whisper barks after dark. Any other time, it's the crazy loud lab barking.

He was adorable this morning..actually waited until he was sure we took care of the noise..then he went back to bed.

2. My big brave pitt bull has no issue with barking loudly but..
...she hides behind me when strangers knock. We both sleep upstairs and she refuses to go downstairs at night without me too. She does have a quiet Little whisper bark in her sleep though. I can not imagine how my courageous dog would act under the circumstances you have described, hell she hides when I play noisy video games!

4. Awwww..she sounds so cute
I can picture her hiding from the noise. Mine seems to be afraid of anything in the air..falling leaves, large birds, especially hawks, even the basketball net. He'll do a crouch walk with his eyes focused upward. He watches airplanes and will even follow the noise of jets inside the house. One day he totally went crazy and we found him focused on the smoke detector..another time it was a light fixture.

5. They have the best "worried" look too....
This adds to their charm, (IMO). Your dog would not like my home. My back yard is under the glidepath to McChord Airforce Base. We average a jet every half hour. (Military jets are way cool so I do not mind the noise).

8. I love their facial expressions
Some of the quizzical looks are hilarious.

Wow..a jet every 1/2 hr? Buddy would probably never stand upright if he were there.

7. I had a dog that barked at airplanes passing overhead, she'd try to
chase them now and then.

Our 10 month old pomeranian still barks at shadows and things she doesn't understand or isn't familiar with. But, she also understands plain, conversational english, which is a real trip. We'll tell her something or ask her to do something, and she does it. My kid and I see her doing this all the time and we just laugh.. No one would ever believe us!

Dogs are great, aren't they?

10. I wish mine would understand english..
He's learning slowly. Seems whoever had him originally trained him with at least one hand signal since he responds to the hand stay command.

I love watching dogs when they first experience something..so often it's comical. Still waiting for snow to fall so he can experience that, he would have been a tiny pup last winter.

Dogs are great!

13. No, when my dogs hear something,
they get their ferocious bark and take off outside. I was woken up 2 times last night with one of them doing that. He was on edge for some reason. I am glad though, they are my protection, and they will take down anyone who tries to mess with me!! Hopefully, the bark will scare people off first.

14. I think mine would expect me to protect him
He's alerted me several times to things happening outside at night..but it's always several quiet woofs.

My previous lab would go crazy if he heard something..although he did once sleep through every window getting soaped and the entire house toilet papered..I suspect because he knew the kids.
