SAMANTHA BEE was nudging her feet into a pair of black boots at the Fluevog store in SoHo, just a replacement pair for her old ones, which seemed no longer to meet the standards of a rising TV personality. Make that a rising pregnant TV personality.
Unlike the star of "Alias," Jennifer Garner, who is also pregnant, Ms. Bee, the only on-camera female correspondent on Comedy Central's "Daily Show With Jon Stewart," does all her own stunts. But Ms. Bee's stunts are generally verbal, like the time she asked a man leaving a voting booth not which candidate he chose but had he "ever had a homosexual thought?" Ms. Bee's path to one of the hottest shows on television was surprisingly ordinary. She wasn't a celebrity in Canada and had no connections. "I auditioned, then I had a callback, then I got the job, then I moved to New York," she said. "It's not like they came to Canada to see me. They overturned a bunch of rocks and I happened to be sitting under one."
Trying on the boots, Ms. Bee insisted that her feet have gotten smaller during her pregnancy, but she still bought the size 8 Shannon boots. In Seven jeans with a comfortable maternity elasticity at the waist and a boat-neck black long-sleeve shirt, she and Jason Jones, her husband of four years, were enjoying an evening of boot shopping, drinks and dinner. Mr. Jones, known for his wisecracks on the short-lived "Craft Corner Deathmatch," has recently joined "The Daily Show" as a freelance correspondent.
On the way to cocktails at Landmarc restaurant in TriBeCa, Mr. Jones had to keep up with his 36-year-old wife, who is due in January. They stopped at a game booth where the player squirts a water gun into a balloon. As Mr. Jones competed against a boy of, say, 12, Ms. Bee cheered, "Win us the kind of toy where the eyes come off and our child chokes on it!" Mr. Jones lost. For the second round the couple faced off. He won a small bear. Like a hunter fresh from the kill, he presented it to his wife.
