Any Mormons here?

Lately, I have been interested in the fact that Utah likes Bush more than any other state right now. In my quest for info, I ended up reading a bunch of articles about the history of Mormons. While it is really interesting, there are a few things I hope a DU mormon can enlighten me on.

1. What are the gold plates that Joseph Smith found? Who made them and how did Smith find them? How was he able to translate the entire book of Mormon off of plates?

2. What are Urim and Thummim?

3. What do you feel are the chief differences between Mormons and other Christians?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Most but not all of them are Republicans. I see the above poster is willing to share the info via PM. :hi:

My mom grew up in the church but isn't active any longer.
