7. I always thought the show was
blatantly racist, even as a child I could understand the racist overtones.

Never was a fan, although I really loved Sally Struthers!

8. unless I am confused about what you mean
That's the point. Archie is supposed to look like a stupid bigot.

But, as I am a Texan, too, maybe we had similar experiences - my family loved it when I was little because they identified with Archie and they loved seeing someone with 'common sense' articulate their views on national television.

9. He did look like a stupid bigot!
I think the problem was that alot of people didn't understand that the show was trying to show "funny bigotry" does that make sense? :hi:

11. Exactly
That's why my dad loves it. And says things like, 'Boy, you'd never get away with saying that on TV nowdays!'... approvingly.

And the show is also about how Mike, being a leftie, is also a political absolutist in his own way... so there is no common ground. And, BOOM! -hilarity ensues.

(Hook 'em!)

16. For the first few episodes they ran a voice-over intro
saying something to the effect "this is a show to help us laugh at our prejudices and to see how silly they are". (Very broad paraphrase)
The creators of the show didn't realize that some people would actually see Archie as a sympathetic character who felt as they did about the world.

15. funny you bring that up
i remember a media studies class i had back in grad school, and we examined the show....the professor showed us the huge survey in the 70s that said a sizable portion of the audience watched because they were archie bunker, and were very unlikely to change their views
