1. Don't feel bad, I live in Houston.
The roaches are fact of life here. We have big flying ones.

Have you tried roach motels, I use them.

You don't have to see the roaches or touch them.

They check in and don't check out.

2. Put the boric acid in the cabinets under the sink
In the Kitchen and the bathroom if you have vanity type sink. That way the poison is behind a cabinet door and your bird won't be able to get to it.

F-ing cockroaches like moist places and the sink area is a good place to poison them.

The bait traps work well. Where do you have those?

I hate cockroaches. The only landlord who was ever able to get rid of them used some illegal pesticide left over from the 60's or something. When he would spray the apartment, you literally could not go in there for a day or two but man did it get rid of the roaches.

I lived in a roach infested apartment for about a year. You learn to turn the lights on for a while before entering the kitchen. Kind of like, what you don't see won't hurt you.

To this day, I hate going into my kitchen at night and turning on the light. And I have never seen a roach in my house in the 10 years I've been here.

Hang in there and good hunting.

3. the baits are working ok
i have seen some dead ones laying around out of nowhere. they must be eating the poison traps....it's still nasty though. makes me paranoid. the biggest problem right now is that i can't even vacuum, which i know helps, because i don't know how to empty it

4. What kind of vacuum do you have?
I've used all kinds of them, and might be able to help you with that.

Roaches give me the willies. I used to live downstairs in a fourplex. The neighbor upstairs reported having roaches, and they had an exterminator come in. Later that day, I opened the kitchen door into the back stairwell, and saw waves of roaches skittering down the stairs. I stuffed towels under the door to keep the buggers from moving in to my place. Just thinking about that may keep me from sleeping well tonight.

if you go to http://assist.hoover.com you can download a manual. You'll need the model number from the sticker on the vacuum. You should be able to sort it out pretty easily. (edit - click on the "get help" button.)

5. I feel for you. My brother had them bad in one of his apartments in
L.A. He said he got used to them but was always embarassed when we would come for a visit. But it's the desert...they like it there and the landlord was an ass about it.

especially with my daughter (she's 5 and in kindergarten), i feel so bad for her when she's here always afraid she's gonna see one and ask what it is and i'm afraid to tell her, i always just call them 'bugs'. i'm always afraid one is gonna sneak into her bookbag or lunchbox and go with her to school, then the teachers and kids will see she brought a cockroach with her and think i'm a bad mommy

7. The sad part is that so many associate cockroaches with dirt and
filth...and it's not that way. I've been in beautiful, huge homes to appraise them and they have cockroaches. You're not a bad mama. You care.

10. They're especially diffficult in apartment buildings.
If the entire building isn't exterminated at the same time, they just move from room to room. As others have said, it's not necessarily a reflection on you.
