6. From Wikipedia.....
Vanderbilt married Hollywood agent Pasquale DiCicco ("Pat" DiCicco) in 1941; they divorced in 1945. Her second marriage, to conductor Leopold Stokowski on April 21, 1945 produced two sons, Leopold Stanislaus Stokowski (born 1950) and Christopher Stokowski (born 1955); they divorced in October 1955. Her third marriage took place on August 28, 1956 to director Sidney Lumet; they divorced in August 1963. Her final marriage to author Wyatt Emory Cooper took place on 1964, ; they had two sons, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper (1965-1988), and newsman Anderson Cooper (born 1967). She also has had close relationships with the photographer Gordon Parks and the cabaret singer Bobby Short.

7. I believe...
...that his brother commited suicide in 1988. I remember reading an article concerning Ms. Vanderbilt and how she dealt with the loss.

Talking sex with Mom

By Anderson Cooper

there is also a gut wrenching essay by "AC" on the CNN website discussing Carter's suicide.

edited to include that url:

11. Much about that article struck me, but especially this quote
"There's no wall between Carter's head and his heart," a friend of his once said. That was true.

16. Every once in awhile I find myself feeling sorry for the wealthy.
They are raised to believe that nothing is beyond their grasp. Small failures at boarding school, small struggles in college, but ultimately money will get them whatever they really want. The average kid has to fight for everything. I have to wonder if Carter thought that, when he jumped, something would save him and give him what he needed or wanted. Isn't that what wealth is supposed to do?

17. I agree
but I also relate so closely to that quote. I've often felt that I'm not strong enough to survive in this world. Life "chews me up and spits me out" over and over and there are times I don't think I can go on. When I was married, I always hoped my husband would sometimes get between me and the world so I could get a respite from it all. He never understood how someone could be smart and independent and need to be protected at the same time.

Oh well. But that quote really, really hit home. It describes me perfectly.

18. Good lord!
Your story sounds like mine. I got divorced because my husband thought smart and independant meant "mommy". A parent who isn't supposed to have needs, flaws or weaknesses.:puke: :boring:

21. look into this, LizzyGrace
You may be an empath, Hon. You DO need to put up some walls for yourself.
Some of us feel the emotions of those around us...and react to them unknowingly....
How do you do in crowds? Do you like visiting hospitals?

It is important for you to determine which are *your* emotions and which are those of others that you can/should block sometimes...

Some of this info comes off as hokey but I have gleaned good ideas from it none the less.

Do some googling...

Can you imagine having a gigantic portrait of your mother hanging over your bed? Eesh. Then again, my mom isn't Gloria Vanderbilt. But still...
