DU Horror Fans: What was your initial reaction to "Last House on the Left"
Mine was "I don't like what I saw..."

Great flick (but definitely not for everyone). Ultimate in nihilist cinema.

3. Um....you might want to read some reviews first
It details a very graphic torture, humiliation and murder of two teenage girls.

At the same time, all of the violence is necesarry to the plot.

Ask BigMcLargeHuge about it

4. I still can't watch it....
Saw that horrible movie in a drive-in about 1970 or so. In fact, I never watch any slasher movies at all since then.

5. I loved it.
I was 12. One of the many reasons I don't buy the whole "children watching violence = children being violent" thing. 100% depends on the child and the parents.

6. Oh it is a great movie
But it left me with a sick feeling inside.

At the end of the movie, EVERYONE is a monster.

7. I had to keep repeating:
"It's only a movie... it's only a movie... it's only a movie"

but my favorite part was the bumbling sheriff and his incompetent deputy (played by Karate Kid Cobra Kai sensei Martin Kove)

and to give an idea of how sick I am, I own this particular piece of depravity (although i havent watched it in forever)

8. Was this the sequel?
There was another flick from the same period called "Don't Look in the Basement" I think one or the other was cashing in on the first. The one that sticks in my mind was about the two girls off to a rock concert.

9. It kind of changed my life
which I know sounds stupid. I was a crazy wild teenager until I saw that movie. I stopped a lot of bad behaviors like accepting rides from strangers. It scared the bad right out of me.

12. Total disgust
I think it went too far. Same mistake "I Spit On Your Grave" made. Too much focus on rape and cruelty, not enough focus on revenge. It's not really a horror story, it's about vengeance.

Even Carpenter said it was so difficult for everyone that they sat alone and refused to talk to anyone - it was just too hurtful.

Khash.

13. I've got a vague memory of seeing a pirated copy at a friends house
when I was pretty young (it was banned here until about 2 years ago, and still has 30 seconds cut - the "wet yourself" bit and the cutting of her chest) but it didn't make a particular impact then and I may have just confused it with other films (I remembered the mothers revenge and assorted scenes from a wood (which could have come from several films)).

I bought the UK DVD release when it came out and must admit I was quite suprised at how tame I found it given its reputation. There are certainly a few moments of disturbing briliance, but my reaction was more one of bemusement. It's a good film though and if it ever gets cleanly through our censors I'll happily add the complete version to my collection.

I found something like Scrapbook, on the other hand, an entirely different kettle of fish and shocked me the way I imagine those 70's horrors shocked their audiences.
