Is there anyone more self-serving than Oprah?
Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 05:53 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Jeez....

I wish I hadn't gotten stuck on this channel. Her fake platitudes of "my prayers are with you" and "God bless", and especially on this one she hauls out her videos of her giving Katrina victims homes, and constantly talking about how much money she gave, and how generous it is, and has the women talk about how awful their lives were and have been and how much better they'll be now that Oprah has rescued them, "Oh, thank you Oprah, for your generosity!" and using them and treating them like objects that serve the glory of the Mighty Oprah and she convinced the Habitat For Humanity people to let her furnish the homes, too....

:puke:

1. ....with donations from Thomasville I am sure. She is the biggest PR
experiment since Madonna...or with Madonna....they've pretty much been around the same amount of time. Yaay! She gave the audience cars that were furnished by the manufacturer. Yay! She has a big "to do" honoring black women and tells them to wear white. Everone wears white...she shows up in flaming red! An ego bigger than her biggest hairstyle. Puke.

I hope I have answered your question. :hi:

9. You forgot that she also
trotted guests from her 'to do' out on her show to TELL EVERYONE how generous she is and to show off the beautiful diamond earrings she gave each and every person lucky enough to attend or be invited to bask in the glory of all that is 'The Oprah.'

but sure, she's done 'good works.' But how good are you really, when everyone has to be told incessantly about every donation or cause you have supported and given to.

If she was anyone but Oprah, I feel that people would be a tad more annoyed and sickened by the WAY she 'gives.'

I see people go on and on about the free giveaways and the charitable donations. Yes these are 'good things.' They would be BETTER in my opinion, if they were done and we all didn't have to hear about it all the time. There are celebrities that do good and give to people that you will never hear about. Because they believe to give and then ANNOUNCE that you have given, cheapens the act. Oprah could stand a bit of that sort of humility--again, this is merely my opinion.

Oh and the free giveaways--anyone ever thought about the money Oprah makes from those shows? Everytime she announces some corporation's name on her show, she gets PAID. She's admitted it herself.

One of the last shows I watched, she said she wasn't going to offer an item, that was 'one of her favorite things' because they 'wouldn't pay her' for the mention. THAT really turned me off, BIG TIME. Yes, I was once a fan of hers--not anymore.

To me she is a narcisstic, insecure phony.

23. Hey, I like Oprah!
But I also like the Brazillian joke. :)

Seriously, Oprah may be smug in the sense that she built an empire out of her own image. She publicizes everything the Oprah does, because the Oprah is the business.

However, at least the people she claims to help get some help. I find the televangelists and fraudulent nonprofits far more self-serving. Oprah may brag, but she's annoying at most.

People more self-serving than Oprah:
- George Bush chickenhawks - you die; they play golf.
- Ann Coulter talking heads - hate, hate, hate (at least Oprah loves you).
- L. Ron Hubbard - www.xenu.net
- John Edward the biggest douche in the universe - Oprah never claimed to speak to the dead.
- Jan and Paul Crouch - Oprah's big hair didn't deplete the ozone layer.
- James Dobson - the religious doctor Phil.

Oprah's crime isn't that she's self-serving. It's that she's inflicted the public with Dr. Phil and Suzie Orman. :scared:

as mechacnically separated pork jowls fly through space, quickly turning into human beef jerky in the sudden cold - only to be pushed towards a new planet by the blast wave of the exploding Death Star. A planet named Earth. Such was the beginning of man, for as those freeze-dried pork(ins)-jowls thawed in our vast oceans, DNA paved the way for humanity.

Happy Thanksgiving, Brother Porkins!

Anyone that rich who spends that much of her money and time helping out others is o.k. by me. Most of the rich simply conspire to steal more for themselves.

I never watch her show, because I work for a living, and talk shows bore me, except for the Daily Show and the Colbare Repore. I think her heart is in the right place.

this woman has given millions out of her own pocket and gotten corps to donate millions more

it is her JOB to publicize herself, she has a teevee show, it is her responsibility to her studio and her sponsors to get publicity for her deeds

if you could do a better job by raising millions to help others, wouldn't you do it or would you refuse because it is against the WASP way to draw attention to yrself? (not implying you're a WASP but that's the only heritage i can think of right now where it's considered tacky to publicize yrself)

my point is, why would it be more important to be non-tacky than to help others? that's pretty self-involved

oprah is one of the good guys

After she got a ton of money in the bank, and Jenny Jones got taken to court, Oprah fired her producer(who made her big) and reformed her show. I've got to say as a long time reader, I don't like any of the books that she's pushed.

You'd bitch at her for that too.

I saw her show the other day about the people who volunteered for Katrina. She first celebrated THEM and what they did during the crisis before giving them free gifts. Since her show is nationally syndicated people all over the country heard about these heroes instead of just a small write up in their local paper. What's wrong with that?

58. I still have a problem with her 50th birthday celebration
She spent millions on herself while all along, asking her viewers to give what they could afford to the Angel Network.

Just imagine if she had given those millions to her own charity.

There was also the Travolta bday party, damn, do these folks think that their grandiose display of wealth gives us joy?

Don't celebrate your wealth by rubbing it in my face and then asking me to give to the less fortunate.

60. I have to admit I didn't see either show
as I don't watch television that much.

But I also have to admit, if I'm rich when I'm 50, I might spend quite a bit on myself too, just due to the emotional impact of turning 50. In a world that is basically in love with women under 25, the rest of us are thrown by the wayside whether we have the big bucks or not.

But if she spent millions on Travolta's birthday that would leave me scratching my head wondering why...

61. I don't know what she spent on Travolta, I know she covered
his million dollar weekend bash on her show and let the world know how much he and his wife spent on celebrating his 50th.

I can't justify spending millions on myself, whether I turn 50 or 100. Especially if I am doing shows about the suffering of others, whether they be the hungry of the world or the survivors of major disasters, and asking the average joes to give what they can to the cause.

64. Only fundamentalist thinking squashes criticism
And only bad logic says "Until you are exactly like such and such, you have no right to criticize such and such".

I have full right and all authority to criticize Oprah - or any person, or any institution, or any idea - for whatever I want to.

Can I give as much money away as she does? Hell no. And I'm glad that I give it.

But I can sure as hell also criticize her doing it in such a self-serving way.

65. So I guess that would make you the fundamentalist thinker...

...since you have squashed my criticism by accusing me of "bad logic."

By the way, I never said you had "no right" to criticize Oprah, only that you may wish to think twice about it given the context. But never mind, factual accuracy isn't really a concern of fundamentalist thinking.

"I have full right and all authority to criticize Oprah - or any person, or any institution, or any idea - for whatever I want to. "

Well then. All bow down to him with full right and all authority to criticize others, and do not dare to disagree.

66. No, you can disagree all you want.
And I didn't squash your RIGHT to criticize; I criticized your criticism because it was telling me that I had no right to criticize Oprah. You used other words, yes, but that was the intent. "You might want to think twice about..." is a euphemism for "you shouldn't think that at all".

And I'm not the only one with full right and authority - everyone has it. So no need to bow down to me, nor to give up one's right to disagree.
