2. Am about to buy a new laptop.... is it time to switch to Mac?
I am not ready for a pc vs. mac discussion but I do feel like I'd like to intellectually own a bit more Mac knowledge.

4. Better read up on the news; Apple is switchin' to Intel-based hardware.
And given OS X = bloaty FreeBSD, you're not missing out on too much already.

Save the $200 for OS X. FreeBSD is, well, free...

10. More desperate Apple bashing from HypnoToad
Every bit as predictable as pathetic. You really went out of your way this time, multiple posts in a thread that's hardly a Mac vs. PC flame, just a question about a single aspect of Tiger.

It's beyond hysterical to see Mac OS X labeled as bloated, when you consider what Windows is at its core. Your cost assessment of OSX is also laughably on the high side. Tiger can be had for less than $100. Must be all those crashes taking its toll.

Meanwhile, my Apple stock is now at $69.34, up another 2.23 in a single session. So keep up the good work. Steve Jobs really is overmatched.

5. Apple is blue, to begin with.
When they release the Intel-based machines, you may find good deals on used Powerbooks.
OS X is as stable an OS as I'ver used. I can't remember the last time my Mac crashed.

3. I'm sure something for FreeBSD or GNOME will be out soon.
OS X is merely a souped-up FreeBSD, sadly.

And yet the cost of the OS or hardware did not go down by Apple ditching their own crap os for a free unix variant, of which I doubt the FreeBSD developers were happy for; now knowing they volunteered for a concept in good faith only to have a slimy company hijack it for their own profit... (not that Apple is alone by ANY measure on this sort of thing... But Apple is the topic of this thread.)

I DO know that Apple will be (heh, "will be") putting back into open source what it has taken from it.

And that OS X, being FreeBSD, is allowing Apple to use Intel chips (why not AMD, you jerks?)

8. No, I don't think so - that looks like it's just a modified task bar
Watch the movie in the OP, and then you'll see.

9. That's just a PC version of a Dock
Dashboard is new to Tiger. It sits in the Dock. It's a handy way to check local weather or have instant access to calculators or calendars or whatever. Very easily customized. I use it all the time. Here's a summary from Apple:

"Dashboard is home to widgets: mini-applications that let you perform common tasks and provide you with fast access to information. With a single click, Dashboard appears, complete with widgets that bring you a world of information — real-time weather, stock tickers, flight information and more — instantly. Dashboard disappears just as easily, so you can get back to what you were doing.

Tiger includes a suite of widgets to get you started, and you can add more anytime. With so many widgets at your disposal, the Widget Bar comes in handy. Click the plus sign and Dashboard launches a Widget Bar displaying every available widget. Drag widgets from the Bar to the Dashboard and watch as they appear with a cool ripple effect. Once you have your widgets where you want them, just close the Widget Bar with a single click."

11. Not even close in most senses, but I use Google's customized
home page to show me the news, stocks that i'm interested in, the titles of my first 5 gmail emails, and a few other things in its nifty drag-n-drop interface. so when I want something like the 'dock' i just press the homepage button ;-)
