No O-Zone Hole? C'mon...

Tell me if this isn't the craziest thing you've ever read! Of course Global Warming exists!

Typical republicans wanting to pretend big businesses don't do ANYTHING harmful!

1. Bwahahahahaha!

1. CFCs are fairly large molecules (chlorine, flourine, and carbon). They're heavier than air; how do they get themselves into the upper atmosphere? Even if they got carried up on a strong gust of wind, the air up there is fairly thin...seems like they'd fall back to earth.

What. An. Idiot.

according to this

This year's ozone hole has closed up. Seems to be a seasonal thing. Doesn't mean there's not a serious longterm problem, though.

9. even still though...
So what if the seasonal hole did, in the words of Governor Arnold, pack up and say "I'll be back..." next year? It was a record setting bad year... they want to pretend like there's really no problem here.

11. Because believeing that it is...
...does nothing to support thier anti-environment standing. Plus Rush has probably told them that it isn't real.

15. don't get me wrong...
I don't believe there's no problem. I believe there's a very serious problem with worldwide climate changes.

I was merely pointing out the article he was probably responding to which states that in fact the ozone hole DID close up for this year. I agree it would be a mistake to interpret that to mean there isn't a serious problem.

10. It is a seasonal thingy.
This only goes to show how under informed the poster on the other site actually is. I really do not understand anyone who is so unwilling to take the time to become informed on such fundamental issues. Particularly when a simply google search will give you more information than yuo could possibly want.

Do you know anything about chemistry?

Freons ARE NOT "fairly large molecules". They're tiny little buggers. A "fairly large molecule" is something like Methylene Blue, around 3,000,000 daltons. They have a low boiling point, and they diffuse rather nicely.

and "flourine" is spelled "fluorine".

20. okay, does that mean we can now worry about the earth's magnetic shield
which is weakening at an alarming rate, allowing increased amounts of cosmic and solar radiation to penetrate the atmosphere and allows solar winds to erode same?

the science. (I'm not an environmental scientist.)

Addition:
It's not worth the time to give this guy a science lesson, when I have work to do. I'll just get berated by some "Bushie 4 Dean" freak, and he'll go on thinking that wind can somehow get a molecule from his air conditioner to Antarctica where it will "rest on the ground during the winter". What a physics-illiterate asshole.

18. Nicely put

Here's one of the best FAQs on the subject

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ohx/ozone/OzoneDepletionFAQ.pdf

I see the wanker didn't heed your hint to research the subject before spouting his mouth off, yet again.

Yet another ignoramus pipes up....

Personally, I'm of the opinion that no refrigerant or CFC's exist in that upper atmosphere. And we technically haven't discovered it yet, blaming the ozone hole on CFC was just a theory.

Where's he pull this one from? CFC are routinely monitored by satellites and ground based infrared spectrophotometry, not to mention the Tuck/NASA U-2 flights back in 1987.

I like their use of "just a theory". That really gets my goat.

(retired, and very irritable, environmental chemist here...)
