Have you ever been in group therapy?
I've been attending a weekly group session for people who feel like there's something wrong with their lives, something missing. In my case I suffer from social anxiety and a therapist thought the group would be a good place to try and work it out. So far I'd say it's been successful at least within the confines of the group. I'm much more outspoken than I was the first few sessions. It hasn't really translated into my life outside the group yet, though, but it's only been a couple of months.

Has group therapy worked for you? What was your experience like?

2. I was put into one once
Never talked. Couldn't relate to the people either.

Half of them were coming out, one was a counselor himself who needed help, and the others had HIV.

And me? Well, I'm just too subhuman, inhuman, or whatever else for my own good. Apart from being introverted. :-)

5. I used to...
attend a mental illness support group. They did help for a while, but recently felt I was not making any progress.

I tried attending a session of a different support group. Unfortunately, it was a waste of time, most of the members of that group turned out to be RW bu$hite Repukes. Definately will not be attending that group of poisonous idiots meetings again.

6. Yes. I was in a grief support group for a few years
after the man I lived with suicided.

I found it very beneficial, as did most of our core group. It helped to alleviate the isolation we felt, and provided us with some folks we could talk with who would not only understand, but who had an endless tolerance for hearing our anger, angst, pain and sadness. Something friends and family can be remarkably uncomfortable with.

Over a period of time it made quite a difference in my perspective and in the ways that I interact with people. I'm not sure I'd have evolved as far as I have without it's influence.

7. I'm about to start
for Social Anxiety. I find it much easier to post on DU than to talk in actual social settings.

Best of luck

9. yes, twice
I was in a group for people managing anxiety disorders that helped quite a bit. At least it got me through some tough times.

I was also in an infant loss support group when my son died three years ago. That didn't help as much, but then again the wound was very fresh.

10. Yes, it sucked but served a useful purpose
It made me realize just how screwed up my then-wife and all the other participating couples AND both therapists were.

Everybody's stupid ideas and feeeeeeeeeelings had to be validated, except nobody would honor my highly rational view of the world.
