How many of you NEVER found 'Friends' to be funny?

I've seen occasional episodes throughout its overlong history.

It is not funny.

Never has.

Never will be.

Or maybe I'm just thick, but we'll discuss that truism later. What makes this show funny? :shrug:

I've always hated Friends and never found it funny. I actually find Becker to be a lot funnier and more enjoyable!

Not anymore. They are too tan, taut, and old to be believable as those New Yorkers at that age.

simple sets and better writing could go a long way

there's got to be better creativity in this country ... I try to imagine ... re the crap on TV ... someone picking up a script and going "OMG ... this is so fab ... we must spend millions to produce it" ... I just don't get it

Posts like yours make me really mad, because people always criticize the writing of the show. But it's not the quality of the writing that's important, IT'S THE QUALITY OF THE FRIENDSHIP! I think it's well-written and well-acted. Lisa Kudrow is great comic and oddly enough, Jennifer Aniston turned out to be a GREAT comedian. I thought she was really weak when the show started, but she's grown a lot.

Not the best show on TV, but definitely better than the likes of Everybody Loves Raymond or much of the other dreck that passes for sitcoms.

It's nothing revolutionary or spectacular, but it's enjoyable enough.

Usually have a bad outlook on life.

By themselves, no problem. But the show is just too cute for my taste.

I do, however, love "Smelly Cat," which I believe is the only episode I ever watched all the way through.

No wit or class, not much of a plot, that I could comprehend. I never did watch it regularly, and I've scarcely had my TV on in the last couple years, but I never could understand how anyone could watch that show unless they were simply vegetating and wanted to stare at a TV screen.

However, I grew up and the "Friends" didn't. They're boring.

I often like ensemble cast shows, but I guess the fact that they were nakedly marketing me with this show just put me right off. I got enough 'shows about nothing in particular' after the first few seasons of Seinfeld, though.

I will say that one of the few good things to come out of the show was Lisa Kudrow's independent film work -- she was great in 'The Opposite Of Sex.'

I don't know -- 'Friends' came on the air just as I was getting sick of everything on network television but 'Homicide: Life On The Streets.' That's the last series I ever watched, and may well be the last one I ever watch. If I want light, screwball comedy, I'll go dig up my copy of 'The Philadelphia Story' and watch it again.

I've only seen it two or three times since it started. I usually watch PBS (no cable), but have seen it on my friends' teevees occasionally and just don't get the hype about it.
Haven't seen "X-Files" but once or twice and thought "Seinfeld" was only okay, too.

Absurd premise. Written in simpleminded, broad strokes. Mugging characters. You just feel the elbow at your ribs, urging, "laugh!"

I can find more constructive ways to spend my leisure time than watching television. Remember, there's a good reason why they call it "programming."

I tell you what, some of the best comedy is right here on DU. There are times I sit here and laugh my ass off over some of the shenanigans here in the lounge and GD. DU's quick wit is fun and funny.

It's not the best thing on the idiot box, but it's not the worst thing either.

My 6 yo son and I watch it together, faithfully.

I mean, the Ahnold-like head fairy? That is classic. Love it!

Because one of my college roommates "Joey", shares some of the qualities of the friends "Joey"...had to be there to believe it. And now he just ran in his first election to become a city council member (and as a repub too, arrrgh! I figured i'd have the liberal inside of him out by now...it's not too late....i can feel the good inside of you...let go of your hate and the dark side Joey...:crazy:)

But there are thousands of shows and movies I can't stand that I won't post in the lounge. People find different stuff funny then other people, you ask What makes this funny? well someone might respond giving their reasons why they think it is funny and you will reply, That's not funny. People have different tastes then other people, lots of people obviously like the show because it has been on the air for what 7 years?

... pile of shit! Total horseshit, in fact. Can't stand it's goofy fuckin optimism. If I lived in the same building as those cunts I'd fuckin kill myself. Why it became so popular, I'll never know. Moreover, I'm always a bit suspicious of people who own DVD box sets of the shite. They all seem to be airheads who hate the unemployed because they're... well, unemployed.

It seems to me you painted them with a broad brush, they like the show you don't. So fucking what, I am sure you like shows that others don't.

... it's fuckin propaganda. I like Laurel and Hardy. I don't like Buster Keaton. But I respect the man's comedic talent. I understand that he's not trying to make me "feel good", he's trying to make me laugh. There is an ocean of difference between the two.

Friends glosses over those aspects of existence which are genuinely humorous. It is anti-human.

then it got stupid or I smartened up....Not my cup of tea....unfortunately in my line of work I'm surrounded by youngsters and many of them love the show and babble on and on about it....but then that's how I was when Northern Exposure was on.

It made me giggle a few times, but I never thought it worth the other 20 minutes of relationship drama that put me to sleep.

An episode...and self same actors being so smug about it...just sort of takes the edge off the laughs, IMO. Not really very likable characters, either.

Worst of the bunch...Matt LeBlanc. Annoying, annoying, annoying.

.... couldn't find a reason to watch it. It is mildly funny sometimes, but as "sitcoms" go there are many, many, many better ones and I only have an hour a week or so to watch them...

but what I did see was "cute" and I'm not a fan of "cute".

I prefer my funny kinda bent and 'Scrubs' IS fooking funny!

The ep I hated most was the one where they had a flashback to where Monica was fat. As if Courteney Cox could have EVER been fat!

I think it epitomizes bad sitcoms.

I will be happy when it's off the air. I happened to catch a few minutes last night and it's really difficult to see them as real characters rather than "the cast from Friends" (if that makes any sense). New blood is DESPERATELY needed.

If I want to laugh out loud, I'll watch Springer.
