2. We had a theory
that it might be this fun, it just hasn't proven true until now.

3. It was nice of CU to cooperate by not covering your receivers.

7. Went great!
Huge rivalry, Huskers were underdogs. We won...well, it looks like 30-3.

:toast:

And the Colorado fans were so awful (throwing things on the field) that they forcibly removed an entire section of the stadium. ;)

8. Thank you!
and you're welcome.

As for Callahan, well...we don't like losing. We're not used to it. There was a bit of panic, but I think he's safe now. ;)

9. Yeah I know you don't like losing.
But what's their record this year? It's not going to be like it was with TO but they'll be competitive.

10. 7-4
but we lost some games we absolutely should not have. And at times we looked downright horrible.

I wasn't among those who wanted him fired. Now, the AD, on the other hand...he needs to go, but that's nothing new. People need to understand that it takes longer than 2 years to change a program. But I can understand the frustration.

13. Yeah but that happens to all teams.
They'll win their share of games. But there's going to be more teams able to go toe to toe with them in the future. There'll be years when they're unbeatable and others when they're so-so. But I think Callahan can take 'em to championship form.
As much as I hate to say it I admire their program in a way. Their success made a total liar of Hayden Fry. I loved Fry as a coach. But when people dared to ask him when could he take Iowa to the next level he started into this rant about Iowa being a small state, nothing to do, crappy weather, etc.........
Funny thing, all that stuff never seemed to stop Nebraska.

:)

11. Callahan deserves every bit of the criticism
Nebraska entered today's game averaging less than 90 yards rushing per game. That is so far beyond disgaceful it can't be described, especially in a defensively inept conference like the Big 12.

The Big 12 as a whole has become a pass happy finesse conference but Nebraska in particular has taken it to another level. Today's 392 yards passing was impressive, but it's hardly foundational. Nebraska needs much more balance or seasons like this will become routine.

12. He changed the entire offense
of course we sucked. Nobody can be expected to go undefeated in the 2nd year after a change this big. But we did go 7-4 and we are going to a bowl game. That's not disgraceful.

I do agree that a few games were pretty dang awful, but Solich had some damn pathetic cames as well.

Did Callahan deserve criticism? Heck yes. Did he deserve the threat of being fired? No. The Huskers would not have benefited by changing coaches after 2 years, in fact, it would have been disasterous.

14. He over-rotated the offense
I never said he deserved to be fired. But if he doesn't quickly realize you can't play 75/25 pass oriented football then he will earn a dismissal. I works in a sports stats office and Nebraska's stats this year scream the coach had an awful year.

Tom Osborne got it right when he said the Big 12 plays in high wind regons in which you need an October/November offense and that's not heavy pass oriented. Bob Stoops went out and got an Adrian Peterson after realizing OU had become too pass happy. Texas averages more than 280 yards rushing this year and going into today Nebraska was 89.6. Those numbers are very revealing of the different levels and fates of these two teams

15. He didn't have a great year, this is true
but we're going to a bowl game, so apparently splitting 75/25 worked better for us than whatever offense was being used by the teams who aren't going to a bowl.

As for the high winds, we just had a hell of a game, in Boulder, in November...using the pass. It will obviously affect some games, but not all of them. Besides, it's not that we didn't have a running game, we just chose not to use it.

If you watched the game today, you would have noticed that most of our passing yards were short (a few yards, at most) little passes to Corey Ross, our I-back. Technically, a passing play, but really? Not so much. That play doesn't work unless you have the ingredients of a good running game.

16. Nebraska is one of my favorite programs
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 08:31 PM by Awsi Dooger
This is hardly Husker bashing. I admire the football program and root for them, although not to the level of my top two teams. My basic theory is not only does a team in that location need to run the football if it wants to be successful in all 11 or 12 games, but also that the premier QBs and WRs are not likely to go there when they have a choice of warm weather football programs that have a history of producing pro style pass oriented offenses.

Colorado tried to switch to a pass happy attack under McCartney but it didn't last at high level. As a Nebraska fan you'll remember that Nebraska routinely thrashed those finesse oriented Colorado teams, even during the year Tommie Frazier was out and Brook Berringer played QB. Now, Nebraska has essentially evolved into the type of finesse team that certain bully teams can pick on.

I think you're exactly right; "not that we didn't have a running game, we just chose not to use it.' I think that's a devastating evaluation of a head coach. Andy Reid of the Eagles also chose not to use his running game this year. The question is not how Nebraska compares to teams that didn't make a bowl, but how Nebraska compares to a different version of itself, one that did fully utilize a physical running game. Dainty swing passes don't wear a team down.

17. woo wooo
Hey huskerlaw,
My alma mater has been in turmoil for a few years now. Hopefully this is the start of a new run. How they could get destroyed by KU one week and then dismantle the puffalos is beyond me. They sure looked sharp in all facets of the game today.

Peace

18. Hello fellow Husker!
Our lovely team does seem a bit schizo at times, doesn't it? I'm with you though, I hope this signals good things to come.

In the meantime, any win against the Buffalo is welcome and to be celebrated. ;)
