8. Canada is Independent?
Damn, when did that happen? I thought the Fenians scared Canada back to mother England's bosom in 1867 lol.

(it's a JOKE...don't worry)

9. not even close
It's Neil Peart indulging his Ayn Rand bullshit. I used to like this song before I knew who she was, and before I knew how much they fetishized her (2112, btw, was dedicated to her - check the notes of the album). It's a put-down of anyone who strives to overcome their social status at the bottom. If you're at the bottom, accept your lot in life, and if you try to overcome it, you are just jealous, people choose to be poor, you want to punish the rich, blah blah, insert GOP rhetoric about 'class warfare', 'punishing the successful' blah blah... It is asserting, as Peart said in an interview once, "Obviously, not all men are created equal". Or as Geddy Lee said, "We'd like to think our fans are like us, long-haired rockers, but basically conservative." :puke:

Rand was a noxious McCarthyite twit. Rush (via Peart) was seduced by her peculiar brand of social Darwinist spew (which is a disservice to Darwin's theories).

I still have an old soft spot for the Rush of that era, musically, anyway. Fuck the Rand bullshit, and how boring they have become in middle age.

14. Believe me, I know the people here that I can trust.
While my wife is infinitely more adept at identifying crap than I am I'll allow the occasional (Intelligent) DU opinion to sway me.

What that means is that I trust you independant of my, literally, omnicient wife.

Go figure:beer:

5. I love this song
For me, the jury's still out on Rush. Neil Peart is a huge Ayn Rand fan, so I'm not sure where he's coming from. Is he an old school conservative? Is he a liberal who is attracted to the concept of unbridled individualism for the sake of interesitng narrative?

I don't know, since I stopped listening to Rush after they began using synthesizers back in the early 80's.

Please enlighten me, since I'm too damn lazy to find our for myself.

They were unabashedly conservative. In the worst way.

I agree about their music, but it wasn't the synthesizers, it was when Peter Brown stopped producing their albums after 1982. They sucked after that.

11. Scroll down to "Geddy Lee of Rush"
...to hear what a wet blanket Geddy Lee is, his appearance on the Mackenzie Brothers LP notwithstanding.

Actually, every interview on this site is hilarious--check out "Gorbachov" and "Alice Cooper" for starters.
