Autograph collectors--whatcha got?
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 10:29 PM by CanuckAmok
I'm more of an accidental collector. I work with celebrities, so occasionally I'll grab one from someone I find remarkable...

I seem to have amassed a bunch of stuff over the years, most notibly:

I have a prop brochure from Cronenberg's "The Dead Zone", autographed by Martin Sheen.

I have a Star Wars boardgame autographed by Mark Hammill.

I have an unopened bottle of gin signed by George Takei, which will be in Mrs. Amok's Christmas stocking this year (in-joke).

A Vampire encyclopedia autographed by Udo Kier (Warhol's Dracula, and in Blade, Shadow of the Vampire, etc).

I have an autographed copy of Meatloaf's "Bat out of Hell" picture-disc.

I have copy of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Songs to Learn and Sing" LP, autographed by the whole band, including the late Peter DeFritas.

An autographed polaroid of Lemmy Killmister, from Motorhead, and another autographed polaroid of Traci Lords.

and...I have a bible, autographed by none-other than Moses himself, Charleton Heston--I'm hoping some RW nutcase will buy it on Ebay when the Omega Man finally kicks it.

Oh, and an "autographed" colour postcard from Socks Clinton.

So, what's on your mantle?

1. Harry Truman
autographed "Year of Decisions" and "Years of Trial and Hope" (2 volume set)...both of which he had signed for my grandparents when my great uncle was the warden at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Of course, they were all life-long Democrats!

:-)

2. Well, I like to collect autographed books
at book signings, which I started 20 years ago my freshman year in college. I attended a workshop from a visiting author whose book we were reading in an English class, and got a real rush when she signed the book.

So now I have a whole bookshelf of autographed books, some well-known, some not-so-well-known. I have a signed copy of Allen Ginsberg's anthology of poems (obtained at one of his last book signings/readings), Myrlie Evers Williams's autobiography (really nice woman, gave a great dramatic reading as well), Helen PreJean's Dead Man Walking (another eloquent, electrifying speaker), Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Margaret Atwood's The Edible Woman (one of the first signed books I got, from a reading she gave at my college 19 years ago, she's not that nice a person, frankly), and books from David Bradley, Paul Rogat Loeb (wonderful progressive activist and author, really nice person too), Joy Nelson (her poetry anthology), and many others.

I also have a Cleveland Indians hat autographed by five very well-known players in 1997, (Charles Nagy, Bartolo Colon, etc.), that I could probably sell for some decent bucks.

5. Not much.
One or maybe two memos from John Wayne. Really insignificant, personal letters, etc. from Paul Newman Joanne Woodward, a note from Kathryn Hepburn - might still have one from Jim Mitchum... stuff from Jim Garner, Mel Gibson ,Jodie Foster, maybe a couple of others. A few scripts...one from Truman Capote. Most of what I had was in the course of work - and I seldom held on to any of it. These are just a few things that I have yet to purge from the old file cabinet.

22. also, a Nolan Ryan baseball....
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 03:37 PM by Bertha Venation
sadly sans autograph. I caught it at a Rangers vs Angels game in Anaheim, 1989. Nolie threw it. Chili Davis fouled it off. Yours truly snagged it. I'd give my right pinkie to get Ryan's autograph on it.

Edit: I wish there were a way to delete or move messages. I didn't mean to put this here.

Arlo Guthrie autographed a coaster for me - he had to take 3 tries to spell my name right. :-)

Robert Cray autographed my cop of the "Showdown!" CD he did with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland.

Warren Zevon autographed a concert flyer of him for me, personalized. Had a grip like steel. No wonder he defied his illness for a year longer than he should have.

Tommy Mars, who played keyboards for Zappa, signed a program from a show of the Seattle Symphony performing Zappa's music, with ex-Zappa band members accompanying the orchestra. Great guy, chatted with us for a while.

Bobby Ingraham of Molly Hatchet signed a CD for me. A real nice guy, chatted with us for a long time at the bar after the show.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, signed a b&w photo for me during the intermission to a show. What a glare! :o Amazing performer.

Al Franken, signed "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot". :D

26. the late great Laura Nyro
autographed an empty pack of Kools (hers) for me after a small concert in northern Virginia shortly before she passed.

If you don't know Laura Nyro, it doesn't matter. If you do, you KNOW what I've got and it's not for sale.

On the other hand, my Bill Clinton scribble on an Inaugural Ball ticket stub just might be negotiable.

30. Laurel & Hardy signed photo postcard, Steve McQueen signed contract...
Audrey Hepburn on a small studio portrait, Grace Kelly on an album page, a couple of *authentic* Sean Connery 8x10s (very hard to find in authentic form).

Two drawings done and signed by Muhammud Ali, a photo signed by Saburo Sakai (legendary WWII Japanese fighter pilot), Audie Murphy on an album page, William Powell and Myrna Loy on album pages, photos signed by heavyweights Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney.

Truman Capote signed contract, three books signed by Jimmy Carter, "Earth in the Balance" signed by Al Gore, several books signed by historian Stephen Ambrose. A signed Audie Murphy album page.

And, one of my favorites, a first edition of Shelby Foote's "The Civil War" three-volume set, which includes a tipped-in sheet with Mr. Foote's dip-pen signature. He does not give autographs, but I understand that a number of these were done for the publisher around 1962.
