1. it never seems to be the right time for me
I've been on DU for over 2 years, have nearly 10,000 posts and have yet to meet a DUer in person.

Something always seems to come up last minute for any DU get togethers & all.

2. If there are a lot of Central NJ DUers and meet-ups...
...then I'm missing all of them. I either miss the heads up here on DU or I can't make it. Sometimes I find out too late and can't confirm that anyone will actually be there or even where it is.

11. Why rely on someone else? Start the process yourself.
That way you know it will at least be convenient to you.

If everyone stands around waiting for someone to take charge, nothing will ever get done.

26. MCS ...
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. If everyone wants to leave off their perfume, cologne, hairspray, lotions, anything else with fragrance, and wash their clothes in fragrance-free detergents (w/out fabric softener), there's half a chance I could go without getting sick. What am I saying?! I can't even get some members of my family to cooperate. So, I'm not exactly shut-in, but pretty darn close to it.

32. my h hates all those things
I use the fragrance free detergent and we have all the fragrance free lotions... I never wear perfume or anything like that. I avoid most of the chemical cleaners as well. My son has very sensitive skin, so it works out well.

H doesn't have MCS, I don't think, but we do know a number of people who actually gag when those things are around.

It is odd how bad a lot of those chemical things smell. I like more subtle scents, myself.

35. With me, it's not a matter of just not liking them.
I get really sick -- the list of symptoms is as long as my arm. Of course, that makes me not like them.

You're right on track about the chemicals. The fragrances are really toxic, but most people can tolerate them for many years before they get sick.

I'm glad you're avoiding the fragrances for your son. They're such a toxic soup.

36. I've never liked any of those strong perfumes....
or the cleaning products. The hand lotions don't really bother me, but my H can smell them at 50 paces...

I still remember a woman that I worked with years ago who used to spray a lot of lysol and other aerosols around at work. She developed cancer and I always wondered if all the chemical products she used could have been a contributing factor....

Although all the plastic molecules we ingest or imbibe, or whatever the term may be... probably aren't a good thing either.

39. I can, too ...
smell them at 50 paces, that is.

The chemicals probably did contribute to that woman's cancer. They are carcinogens as well as neurotoxins. If people only knew ...

62. I'm sorry, Airmen'sMom
my MCS has settled down luckily...I know how you feel. When I was very sick with CFIDS & Fibro, my MCS was way off the map. I couldn't even tolerate smells like vinegar, onions and garlic. It was really a nightmare.

As the others have improved, so has the MCS. I still only use borax & lemon juice to clean, hydrogen peroxide to disinfect, but can now tolerate some lightly scented natural products.

I hope yours will improve, too.

71. Wow, u4ic!
I almost missed your reply somehow.

I've never known anyone else with MCS (I don't know my doctor's other patients). I can tolerate those smells -- it's the chemicals that get me. Perfume, smelly laundry detergent (that "clean" smell ... NOT clean!), hairpspray, etc.

We clean with Seventh Generation fragrance-free products. And we use natural products for soap and shampoo. I have to go inside when anyone in the neighborhood is running their dryer. They all think I'm nuts b/c I "don't like" their Tide with Febreeze.

I'm so glad yours has improved. How long did it take? I've been sick for almost 5 years and my doctor thinks I might be one of the few who don't improve, considering there has been no improvement since I stopped working 4 years ago.

It was fairly common in the '80s. No idea of the etymology... except that it derived from "scoshia" (or maybe "scotia"), as in "A wee scoshia bit."
