remember the song "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen?
also recorded by Judy Collins? . . . well, here's Suzanne's story in her own words, via a 1998 BBC interview . . .

1. I don't have time to read it
now. Later maybe, when I can spend the night forever.

3. A beautiful song.
I've often wondered who his muse was. I imagined her to be something like Suzanne Verdal...maybe more wraithlike, though.

6. Or "Hallelujah". That's his best, IMHO.
I've heard some great covers of it.

7. Thanks for posting this. I always liked the song
Suzanne sounds like she hasn't changed much. I often wonder about these Sixties icons and whether they survived that cold winter of the Eighties intact.

11. Nice.
Thanks for that - it's a lovely interview. Every once in awhile, someone posts something and I remember my past. (At my age, one's happy to have had a past, but we're more interested in the *now*).

Anyhow, I spent some time with Leonard at the end of the 60's. Matter of fact, on a rainy afternoon in Vancouver we went to see Little Big Man (which he loved) - and came out of the theatre to discover my car had been towed. It was dark and rainy, so we took a cab back to West Van; drank hot sake and he recited some Russian poetry for me. We were negotiating to use his music in McCabe and Mrs. Miller at the time. He wasn't terribly enthusiastic about it and I was supposed to try and talk him into it. His music is one of my favorite elements of the movie.

14. Oh my God...WHO ARE YOU???
You have been involved with both Leonard Cohen and McCabe? You're talking about two of my absolute favorite pop-culture sources from that era!

:wow:

Great song.

Judy Collins performed this at Bridges Auditorium this Summer in Claremont. Heavenly.
