Who are the top 5 most universally recognizable movie stars of all time?
I'd have to vote for:

Marilyn Monroe
Humphrey Boggart
Audrey Hepburn
James Dean
I can't decide on a 5th

4. Not Spencer Tracy, but he should be.
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 10:03 PM by hickman1937
He was the best of the best. The only actor that even comes close in our times is Tom Hanks. No one could ever do an impression of Tracy because he was any role he took. No ticks, no tricks, just great acting.
on edit my second is Laurence Olivier. For the same reasons.

17. Ok, I'll try.
Spencer Tracy because he was the best of the best.
Julie Andrews because she could have been, but never took the challenge.
Laurence Olivier because he was Spencer Tracy's British counter part. and fore runner
Ellen Burstyn- best of the best.
Meryl Streep when she decides to put some effort into it, which hasn't happened in about 10 years.
Tom Hanks will be if he ever starts paying attention.
The best of the best do drama for fun, and comedy for the challenge of working the high wire, and succeed at both.

19. That would probably be Katharine Hepburn.
She started working when my Great Grandparents were alive and saw her in the movies. My daughter sat with me and watched her in Love Affair. I think that's 5 generations.

22. Well, by universally recognizable, I assume you mean that most anybody
Edited on Wed Nov-30-05 06:18 AM by ET Awful
would recognize them in an instant.

I don't know that everybody would recognize Bogie, Hepburn and Dean. Many would, but I think a lot of the younger types wouldn't simply because they don't pay attention to old films :). Monroe is an icon and most would recognize her. If you said the name "Bogart" to people, they'd know that he was a movie star, but many today couldn't pick him out of a line-up.

I'd say:

Jack Nicholson
Marilyn Monroe
Johnny Depp

I'll have to think about the last two.

I say Depp and Nicholson because at this point in time, EVERYBODY would recognize them.

But any list without Connery, Pacino, and Deniro is lacking. I don't think anyone wouldn't know who they are.
