6. It appears it's a bit of a mystery
Apparently the prevailing theory is that it stimulates nerves around the itchy spot and sort of drowns out the flow of input "data" that tells you something itches.
Of course, scratch hard enough and long enough and you damage the skin, releasing histamines that cause inflammation and further itching. Which you scratch.
Rinse, lather, repeat. :)
