7. I dated a few guys in high school
I lived in a small town where everybody was always in everybody elses' business, and being gay was not acceptable in the least. I knew already I was a lesbian, but I dated guys here and there for cover to avoid being labeled a dyke. Of course none of the relationships lasted long--once they realized I wasn't going to put out they dumped me.

12. I've never dated women since I knew
and wouldn't do so - but I can see why small town + homophobia = dating other sex.

Thankfully I've come across very little actual homophobia in my time - at school (an all boys school to make things worse) 'gay' was the favoured insult, but it was in jest and when one boy in my year did actually come out nobody even batted an eye-lid.

8. My friend who is gay did.
He said he it really hit him that he was gay when he got grossed out by kissing a girl.

I also dated a guy in High School who ended up being gay. And I had a crush on another one who ended up being gay, too. I was a bit clueless back then.

16. I've always wondered about this
and probably the answer is that there is no single answer...

but are gay folks as repulsed by the ideas of intimacy with the opposite sex as straight folks are by the same?

Or is it just preference for one over the other, or is it not even sexual?

Or is it just a continuum and everybody fits somewhere on the line?

This is interesting to me as an author.

19. I don't beleive in sexual absolutes.
Being Bi myself, I have seen that the range of feelings can be quite varied. From total repulsion on both sides of the isile to it "feels pretty good", but I don't make a steady habit of it.

BTW, My friend in High School, who was gay, was so turned off to girls he wouldn't touch me for weeks if I had been near one. Said the idea made him want to puke.

21. Kinsey had a scale from 1=all straight to 6=all gay.
Most people are somewhere in between when you look at the sum total of thoughts and actions. Very few people are free from any thoughts, attractions, or actions that vary from their stated identity. Sexuality can be very complex and fluid.

27. Some gay folks do detest the idea of intimacy with the opposite gender
Then there are others who can handle some level of contact, such as kissing but nothing more, or even a little petting but not intercourse. Gay or straight, everyone has their personal tastes and limits.

17. I'm straight, but I dated a guy in high school, who turned out to be gay,
We were very good friends and I think he was genuinely conflicted, at the time. I saw him struggle with his feelings for another girl, before we dated, and after we parted ways, I never heard of him dating any women. Within a couple years, I heard he had come out and had a boyfriend. He was one of the best guys I have ever had the privilege to know, but as much as I adored him, I admittedly didn't feel physically attracted to him (and he was a very good looking guy,) so that probably should've tipped me off! I've always laughed and consoled myself with the fact that the only guy who ever broke off a relationship with me turned out to be gay.

20. Yes. I was trying to be straight.
I failed, but I had a very good time and no regrets. I was in college and my girlfriend was actually quite supportive as I began coming out. She was also more experienced than I was, so I learned quite a lot.

23. I dated a lesbian.
I was very interested in her, I found her very attractive. Mostly she was a wonderful and interesting person, although in retrospect, she was somewhat self-serving.

After a few dates, she became open about who she was, but indicated that she was still interested in pursuing our relationship. (She had professional reasons for wishing to seem heterosexual, I think.) I perservered for a while because a good friend was married to a bisexual lesbian and it seemed to work for them.

It didn't work for me though. (It didn't work for my friend either; ultimately he had a bitter divorce.)

Overall the whole experience was draining, pretty painful, although it was also enlightening. It helped me to look at my life and how I viewed women and relationships. This helped me on the way to my very happy marriage. So overall, I'm glad it happened.

Personally though I wish that everyone could simply be who they are so that no one gets caught in the crossfire of these kinds of things.
