Murphy strikes again
yesterday morning I decided to take the day off. What happened at work then? The database brought an error message - database defect ....

My co-worker isn't as experiences as I am with the server. So of course it had to happen when I am not here. I got it back to work this morning with the help of the software company.

:argh:

2. I am a geek
maybe not a super duper geek but I love to work with computers and I love to read. I guess you can call that a geek :)

How you doing today?

3. I misunderstood the definition of 'geek' until recently
Some geeks explained to me that a "geek" is someone who's seriously into something that isn't in the mainstream of cool.

I thought, "OMG! I'm a geek! A Monty Python geek!"

:bounce:

But, to answer your question, I'm about ready for bed. :boring:

Oh... all those smileys you turned me onto last night — do you just copy and paste them? DU doesn't seem to support them with the : : code.

4. well, reading doesn't seem to be mainstream anymore
so I guess it counts for the geek definition.

About the smilies, I klick on the picture, properties and then copy the URL adress in here.

Oh and good night and sweet dreams

5. Depends on what you read
I'm given to understand that the Harry Potter series is cool. And maybe Stephen King and Tom Clancy and stuff. I dunno.

Point being, if you read what everybody else is reading, I suppose that's somehow cool. But if you read... oh, WWII history, for example... you're probably a geek.

I didn't think of copying the URL. Thanks for the tip.

Good night, DU.

6. I read different things
yes, I read Harry Potter, I like mysteries (not so much Stephen King), but I also read biographies and historical books (non-fiction). What does that make me?

20. no, just a some minutes
nothing that kept me from relaxing yesterday.
She didn't get the problem solved yesterday but that wasn't her fault. I had to call the software company myself this morning to get the problem fixed. And we still don't know where the error is. It happened already the second time with half a year. Oh well, one day we might find out

22. well, it kinda was a major problem
when it says "database defect" ..... but we have enough other things to do that it isn't a big problem when the database isn't running one day.

25. true
fortunately. I mean it isn't possible in any company to be able to call in in the morning and telling your boss you take the day off. And I am not making use of that option too often. I am glad that I have the option though. Don't know if that still will be possible when my now boss retires in a year.

14. typical
Any day you take off will be the day something goes wrong.
Glad you didn't have to go in.

I've decided I always need to take vacations where there are no phones/cell service, or internet access. I had to make a call into the office from high camp on Mt. Ranier once to talk them through a problem. Damn cell phones.

16. oh that sucks
why didn't you turn your cell off when you were at Mt. Ranier? Ok, I guess I wouldn't have turned it off myself.

My co-worker called me and I talked her through. And told her to call the software company also.

19. There was no one to back me up at the time.
Still don't have anyone in house, but I hired a support company to take care of things when I'm away.

18. Don't feel bad
about taking the day off MissHoneychurch. Just goes to show how important you are to your employer. They can't get along without you! Nice to be wanted. I ALMOST checked my work e-mail from the jungle until one of my companions stopped me, although I did e-mail a friend. Sheesh . . .

24. Oh I don't feel bad about taking the day off
but you are right, haven't thought about that, how important I am (I don't take myself THAT important and my job is safe).
