What's wrong with me?

If I don't like a painting, or other piece of art... well, usually I'll just stop looking at it. I don't get too worked up about it, and I don't put a whole lot more time and effort into not liking it than that.

And sometimes... I'll even come back and look at it again in the future, to see if I like it with more life experience and a little different perspective. I've actually changed my mind about several artists or artworks that way.

I'm supposed to be an artist, yet I struggle with this secret affliction. I hang my head in shame. Oh god, what's wrong with me?!

8. Good!

Then even if we are wrong, at least we can be wrong together.

But I don't think we're wrong.

Nah. Not us.

Seriously doubt it.

Gotta be.

I can't imagine anyone ever being right-er.

Yep, we're right. Definitely right.

9. Whew!

I'm glad you think so. I was afraid I might have to go on a rant about artists whose creations I don't particularly care for.

And that seems like actual work.

If I was an art critic and got paid for it, then maybe. But I'm just me, so who cares what I think, you know? It's all so subjective anyway.

You'd back me up even if you thought I was wrong, as long as you thought I thought I was right, on the severely off-chance that I actually might be. Right, that is.

You inflate my ego shamelessly and without justification.

You know that's why I adore you.

5. If something doesn't mesh with you, maybe it just.... doesn't.
For whatever reason. Some stuff, no matter how many times someone tells me I should like it, or how badly I feel I should like it, I just don't. It's unexplainable, but entirely normal I would imagine.

20. Right.

And the reverse is also true. No matter how much I think a work of art sucks, my opinion doesn't actually make it suck. Likewise, the claim that the work is fabulous, by those who appreciate it, is equally valid.

Thanks for the input.

7. Nothing at all
Art is an emotional experience, not an aesthetic one. Ever met a person you just didn't like, and couldn't explain why? Same phenomenon basically.

17. Oh, yes, yes... YES!!!

Uh...

I mean, you are so right about acquiring a taste for art that way. Or, as I stated in another recent post:

"You know, back when I was working on my undergraduate degree in fine art, if my classmates or I saw a work of art by a well known, successful artist, and we couldn't really appreciate it... we would pretty much presume that the problem was our lack of education rather than the well known, successful artist's lack of talent."

As an underclassman I remember having strong opinions about Pollack, thinking that his work was bad and that he was a bad artist. (Back then there was no distinction between the two in my mind.) When I found out that he was an alcoholic and oftentimes painted while intoxicated (PUI, ha ha), I thought what the hell, doesn't that only serve my argument?! But like you, it took seeing a Pollack in person, and educating myself a bit as to how and why he painted the way he did, to really open my eyes. Same with Rothko. Per "My Rothko Moment":

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=4274098#4276215

There are still famous artists whose work I don't really appreciate. For example, I'm not a big Dali fan or Picasso fan, to tell you the truth. But I feel a lot more qualified to ask someone who does appreciate them to explain to me why they think the work is grand, than I do to go off on a public rant about how much Dali and Picasso suck.

Anyway, in the interests of full disclosure, I should probably note for the record that you are also a biased supporter, being my kept man and all. Oh wait, you haven't formally accepted the position yet, as I recall. Um... what's the hold up? Do you want me to beg? 'Cuz I will...

16. I find your ability to walk away without hurling insults
rather refreshing, and the fact that you can revisit the piece in the future and look at it with a different perspective is a plus. As you are an artist, I know you recognize the effort, blood, sweat, and tears that go in to creating a work of art. You not liking it does not take away from the fact that it was another's expression, and if you don't get worked up about it, I think you are recognizing this.

Just a thought...

19. Excellent point.

One ought at least respect the effort that went into a work, even if one cannot appreciate the final outcome.

As for me, I readily acknowledge that I am too dull sometimes to recognize another's genius.

Thank you for the insight.

22. Sounds like you are "growing"..
... for lack of a better term.

I've never "gotten" the visual arts much, I've seen paintings that I thought were beautiful, but never seem to feel the emotional/visceral thing that most people feel.

On the other hand, I hear music completely. And I periodically find myself really appreciating a song/composition that basically went right over my head before :)

Hey, if you can't change your mind maybe you don't have one :)

23. I hope I continue to grow (learn) right up until the moment I die.

Because if I'm not too stubborn to learn from my mistakes, I'll be the smartest person in the world. Otherwise, I'll just be an average person with the most mistakes. :D

I wish I could hear music the way you hear it. It sounds almost like you can "visualise" it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

38. There is nothing wrong with you
Time, education, experience and other life events can all affect you in ways that can change your perspective on many things. People are not static beings. There is no reason to think that your artwork should be exempt from this phenomena. In fact, if you are having trouble with a particular piece, putting it away for a while might be just the thing you need.
