I lived near Baltimore when we had the CFL Colts. I was kind of sad to learn we'd get an NFL team, because I knew that meant the end of the Colts. I'm sure I was one of the very few who felt that way, though :)

Edited on Wed Nov-30-05 05:04 PM by hfojvt
but to watch? Even soccer is probably better to watch. Football is fun to watch, but less fun to play. I say basketball. Fun to play and watch. Volleyball is fun too, but more violent with all of its spiking, and also no fun to play if they will not let you hit the ball with an open hand.

21. To those who say baseball is boring to watch
I say, "You're not watching it right."

If you've seen baseball only on teevee, you're getting ripped off. Especially if it was on Faux. :puke:

Being at a game involves a whole different set of sensations. There's nothing quite like it. But you still gotta know what to watch, and if all you watch is the ball, you're missing at least half the experience.

'course, that goes for most any sport.

31. Here's how the Bleacher Creatures sang it
To the ball game take me out
With the crowd buy me some
peanuts and Cracker Jack, I don't care
if I ever get back, for it's root, root, root
for the home team if they don't
win it's a shame, for it's one
two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game
Take me out!

33. at least if I see it on TV, I am only spending my time
Same with football or basketball. Fortunately I do not have to take a college class or something to learn how to watch them, something I apparently did not learn from playing it for several years as a kid.

Or are you saying they have cheerleaders? That's what I remember watching at my first HS football game.

38. Yeah, I know, baseball is just so damn complicated
Wow, let's throw a guy high and tight to set up an outside breaking ball. Rocket science.

Baseball is loved primarily because it's the only sport most fans truly understand. There's basically nothing going on so you can't miss anything. All the action is centered around the ball or a few guys running around when the ball's in play. The strategic variations from team to team or era to era are minor bordering on zero. That may sound pompous but so be it. It fits. Baseball is indeed boring to watch. Other than the playoffs when they actually inject intensity and the bum pitchers are excluded.

In football there are so many permutations it's damn near impossible to actually understand what happened in a game without watching the replay and isolating on individual matchups, especialy on the line of scrimmage but also in the secondary. When you do that you can see how one move early in the game that was completely ignored by the announcers set up a decisive play much later on. It is a brilliant sport with incredible diversity in style of play and changes from decade to decade. I have old tapes and you can watch previous techniques that have morphed into something else.

17. Ultimate Frisbee
Because I've never been in better physical condition than when I played, and because it truly espouses the values that other sports just pretend to: teamwork, intelligence, never giving up and sportsmanship. Alas, the reason it gets away with those things is that money isn't involved. If it was the only game in town then bad things would happen. Bad things man.

37. Baseball. It's the only one I actually understand and
can keep up with what's going on in the game.

Not meaning to piss off any football fans, but I still don't understand football to this day. It just seems like they are playing with their balls, running and jumping on top of each other in a pile and then patting each other on the ass all the while talking about how much they hate gay people. What's up with that?

44. Hoops. Speed, teamwork, big men in small shorts. What's not to like.
But if the shorts get any longer i may have to reassess. It looks like they are playing in skirts out there sometimes. The great thing about basketball is the minimal equipment involved and the adaptability to varying numbers of players. Much of the same could be said about soccer.

46. A most difficult choice.
The only ones worth contemplating being rugby and cricket - but how to chose between them?

I had to go with cricket - it is a pure distillation of all that is good about an English summer.

Now I'm going to weep over the demise of rugby
