Can you collect unemployment if you quit?
I always thought you couldn't, but my sister is telling me on the phone right now about her friend who quit her job and got unemployment for basically a stupid reason (she called it a hostile work environment, she thought the people "didn't like her").

My sister's roommate has moved out abruptly, she won't be able to
afford her apartment and might move in with me. I live too far from her job for her to keep it, and we're talking about how she's going to pay her other bills while she's looking for a job here. She also said someone told her that some people are in college and get unemployment.

:WTF: is going on here?

2. I think in cases of unbearable work environment
with documentation to support such a claim, you can get Unenjoyment. But just quitting, no!

4. Yes, you can
There is a much longer waiting period, though. And you have to have quit for a good reason, like hostile work environment, change in job description, etc. The company will fight like crazy, though.

7. I quit a job
because they wanted me to do something illegal. A week later they got raided and it was on our local news. I didn't apply for unemployment because I didn't think I would get it because I quit. But, several friends said that since I quit for the reason I did, that I would be eligible. So, I took a chance--filed--and got it. Tell your friend to take a chance and file.

8. My cousin just went through this. She walked out
from her job and could not get unemployment.
She took it to the hearing level and lost.

9. Would this ever really be necessary? Wouldn't it be easy to get fired?

What if you went in one day and cursed out the boss. If they fired you then, you could collect unemployment (couldn't you)?

10. You can't collect if you curse out the boss
You could try but your boss could easily contest it and you would ge nothing.

11. Nope. You got to get the company to get rid of you in a faultless way.
Good luck. They don't want any Unemployment insurance (UI)-related problems or to have to dole out more money because their mistake ended up making them pay $x for 6 months...

Many companies even risk lawsuits to get people out the door by any means that keeps them from paying more UI.

12. We had a new hire get it after two weeks.
She quit due to serious mis-representations of her job functions by the manager who hired her. He told her she would be working in an office, she was placed on the warehouse floor inspecting the final product. As far as I know she collected as she should have.

13. I quit and tried to collect but I got another job within a week
so I never followed through the whole process. The person who suggested I collect worked with workmen's comp claims and said I had an excellent chance of getting unemployment even though I literally said I quit and walked out during a shift. A hostile work environment isn't as simple as people not liking you. It almost always involves illegal behaviors and policy violations.
