Why education is important.

I'm in a graduate education program, going for a master's in teaching degree. Right now I'm taking an online class, and a few days ago in this class we were asked the question, "Why is education important"? I said this:

If we don’t educate ourselves, we may end up voting for complete idiots who add $2 trillion to the national debt in five years; push our trade deficit past $650 billion; drive the US dollar down against other currencies; try to destroy social security, environmental protections and labor laws; justify war with lies; and pander to theocratic nut jobs like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. Thank God we don’t elect anyone like that in this country.
