So, the non-profit I volunteer for wants to hire me
and the exec. director is a republican who digs O'Reilly. And get this...I actually like the guy.

Damn.

My brain split into two and ran in different directions over that.

1. There are pleasant republicans...
Just don't get them started about anything right wing. The chick I sit with at work can be pleasant. But most of the time she annoys the shit out of me with her rhetoric and how BBC is propaganda for the left. OH SHUT UP!

2. What a valuable opportunity to gently hold the opposition,
bridge the differences and speak to integration since it's all just different parts of our common ground. The downside is that it also can bring reactivity to polarization and marginalization sometimes angrily acted out in some intensity or other. If the two of you get along, that's the basis of a good relationship. If you keep that in mind and explore the differences that come up(which it's always okay to do), you should be fine.

3. His mission is the same as mine.
To make sure disabled people get what they need with dignity. He is fantastic at what he does AND he is a retired IT guy with a big heart.

6. He has the mojo and the say so. You're coming up.
It sounds like a really good match for both of you in potentiating what the relationship otherwise inherently brings. The success of the relationship rides on how the two of you potentiate the opportunities available to you. To the extent that he feels comfortable with this will determine the results the two of you have in, ultimately, providing the best services for your clients.

8. I have a boss like that
Meaning a rabid neocon who happens to be a close friend (take away the ideology, and we're very similar). (Not the boss who is currently the subject of a bathing thread here in the Lounge. I don't like that guy, even though he's supposedly a dem.)

Congrats on being wanted!

10. I know and like a lot of Republicans.
And my philosophy is that unless it's utterly repugnant to me for some reason, I would never turn down a job if I needed one.

Separate politics from the person. It CAN be done (and, IMO, must be done frequently).

Good luck!

11. It would be an ideal job for me.
Developing fundraising, getting key speakers for events, creating their newsletter (which I have been doing anyway).

This agency works with all disabilities. Doesn't matter if you've had a stroke, you're in a wheechair, you are developmentally disabled, you have an addiction...they have resources for everyone. Once you walk through their doors and ask for help, you get it no matter what. The people they help are truly the most important part of their jobs. It's a great thing.
