The U.S. National Anthem. Let's take our country back from the current
group of thugs running the country! Good Bless America!

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

2. The lyrics have always bothered me
All the "bombs bursting in air" and blood shit. Why don't we just make Jimi Hendrix's instrumental version the "official anthem" and call it good? :)

3. I don't get this.
First, where is there blood in the song? I don't remember that. Second, it references the Revolutionary War, which led to our independence. It's not as though it espouses guns in the street now. Are you against fireworks on the Fourth of July for the same reason?

4. Actually it was written as a poem during the War of 1812.
That's the war it references.

5. I. Hate. That. Fucking. Song.
Put it against, say, "O Canada" and it's just embarrassing.

I much prefer this:

O beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesty
Above the fruited plain
America, America
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness
America, America
God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control
Thy liberty in law

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life
America, America
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears
America, America
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea

18. No offense, but let's not recommend any songs with religious references
It will just give the Fundies more ideas. :scared:

19. Yeah — this was my first choice
but I didn't think it'd fly.

I'm proud
to be an American
I'm proud
of the groovy things we've done
There's television, free religion, rock 'n' roll, Standard Oil
Times Square, Jimmy Darren, Corey Wells, and Smokey Bear
price reduction, reconstruction, Peace Corps and lots more
Culture that we got to lend

I'm proud
to be an American
And I'm proud
Had a great time bein' one
There's your school and my school and both of us in high school
surfboards, cigarettes, homework, Southern Comfort
Boy's dean was real mean
Made us keep our lockers clean
Failed nearly every class
Ditchin' was a gas

I'm proud
to be a young American
I'm proud — just think about it
All the far out things that we've begun
There's revolution, constitution, land, sea and air pollution,
cold wars, hot wars, gas wars and confrontations,
constipation, consternation, open-hearted palpitations
Muscular Dystrophy

I'm proud to be an American
Because we got department stores full of cheap guitars
But when Sputnik plays 'em you just go go go go!

I'm proud to be an American
(We got two chickens in every garage)
And I wish every other kid could be one
(In my country, the medium IS the massage)
'Cause it's impossible to give
Equality and justice to inferior foreigners
too jealous to trust us
(Give me your weak and your homeless)
(How 'bout checkin' the oil, ah, fella?)

I'm proud to be an American...

10. Wife is a direct descendant of Francis Scott Key
and I still don't like our National Anthem. "America the Beautiful" is a better song, and easier to sing as well.

Her family still has some 150 year old copy of the poem hanging on the wall, but they're all army conservatives. They also toast Mr. Key at every holiday dinner - that's weird...

. . . . Had to do with independence.

20. I'm at best a VERY liberal Christian
but I still like America the Beautiful better. WAY better.

It's a song about peace and prosperity, and it's a lot easier to sing.

And the references to God are VERY mellow, peaceful, and optimistic.

"God shed His grace on thee"

24. I like this version of America - it has a nice beat too
ANITA
Puerto Rico,
My heart’s devotion--
Let it sink back in the ocean.
Always the hurricanes blowing,
Always the population growing,
And the money owing.
And the sunlight streaming,
And the natives steaming.
I like the island Manhattan,
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

GIRLS (chorus)
I like to be in America,
Okay by me in America,
Everything free in America -

BERNARDO
For a small fee in America.

ANITA
Buying on credit is so nice.

BERNARDO
One look at us and they charge twice.

ROSALIA
I’ll have my own washing machine.

JUANO
What will you have, though, to keep clean?

ANITA
Skyscrapers bloom in America.

ANOTHER GIRL
Cadillacs zoom in America.

ANOTHER GIRL
Industry boom in America.

BOYS
Twelve in a room in America.

ANITA
Lots of new housing with more space.

BERNARDO
Lots of doors slamming in our face.

ANITA
I’ll get a terrace apartment.

BERNARDO
Better get rid of your accent.

ANITA AND THREE GIRLS
Life can be bright in America.

BERNARDO
If you can fight in America.

ALL GIRLS
Life is all right in America.

ALL BOYS
If you’re all white in America.

(an interlude of WHISTLING and DANCING)

ANITA AND CONSUELO
Here you are free and you have pride.

BERNARDO
Long as you stay on your own side.

ANITA
Free to be anything you choose.

ALL BOYS
Free to wait tables and shine shoes.

BERNARDO
Everywhere grime in America,
Organized crime in America,
Terrible time in America.

ANITA
You forget I’m in America.

(An interlude of MORE DANCING)

BERNARDO
I think I go back to San Juan

ANITA
I know a boat you can get on.

BERNARDO
Everyone there will give big cheer.

ANITA
Everyone there will have moved here.

25. The tune was originally that of a drinking song.
" It became well known as a patriotic song to the tune of a popular English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven."
