Disaster preparedness??? Clue me in.
A friend called tonight, saying her spouse has been doing some strange things.

He's been on a shopping spree of sorts, buying survival gear and MRE's. They don't live anywhere near a hurricane area, or affected much by natural disasters.

It's not like they don't already have food -- she prefers to cook from scratch for dietary reasons, and keeps a larder of staple items like flour, oil, dried beans, canned food.

But she's scratching her head like a :wtf: moment...Can you clue both of us?

4. They've been through EQ's to Richter 7
but their home is in good shape. If not an EQ, then what?

5. Perhaps it is reaction to what happened in NOLA and the Gulf Coast
Cannot count on FEMA or other aid programs to help.

When my husband and I move out to SoCal, we are planning to have quite a bit of stuff set aside for EQ preparedness...

6. Yup, he "prepared" for Y2K also
There is a 5 YO can of SPAM from that one still sitting in their larder -- I said, use it for a hockey puck!

9. If it's an earthquake area...

...it could be in case one hits and damages supply chains. You can potentialy lose water, power and access to food in a "big one" (even if they can get to the shops, can the delivery trucks?).

I'm in New Zealand, where an interesting weekend could potentially include a volcanic eruption/earthquake/flood/lahar/tsunami/all of the above: I keep a weeks supply of everything just in case I need it. Nasty to run out of toilet paper when the main road is gone...

AbE: Or possibly paranoid about Bird 'Flu, so they can hole up while it blows over...

2. What's he afraid of?
Social unrest, the end of the world, natural disaster?

Whether or not he's cracked his nut really depends on whether he's acting out of caution or out of fear. In either case he should be consutling with his wife before making big purchases or lifestyle changes.

12. I don't know about your friend's husband, but I was tempted to
do the same thing after seeing the government's response to Katrina. And I live in an area that is not at all prone to natural disasters. I think it was stunning to realize that if catastrophe strikes, you are truly on your own.

13. Ya.. Nothing happens here.
Except snow. Lots of that white crap that just doesnt go away. Course its never a bad idea to prepare in case something does happen.

14. I saw this survival bucket that you could buy. It was a five gallon
bucket filled with typical survival things, a flashlight, MRE's, etc. Anyway, you could buy an optional toilet seat that fit over the five gallon bucket and use it for a toilet! Well, that was nearly enough to convince me to get it! You never know when you'll need an extra toilet.
